Gloomhaven / Jaws of the Lion / Frosthaven

Gloomhaven has been on my list of games to play for years now, and it took a pandemic for me to finally get going!

I've a great friend who lives about 2 hours away, and if he'd been round the corner, we almost certainly would've rinsed the Gloomhaven campaign already. However, with the introduction of lockdown, he and I have been playing through using Tabletop Simulator with a weekly Wednesday night session of 2-3 hours.

We are probably 10 sessions in, and quite a bit has opened up - the first scenario took is 3 attempts to finally get some of the combos going, but what a hoot we've had.

I randomly chose my starting character, the Scoundrel and my mate is a Cragheart - it's led to some great City / Road experiences already and the story is really starting to pick up the pace.

Knowing that I'd never get the rest of the family to the table for Gloomhaven, I'm really excited about the August-released Jaws of the Lion standalone campaign. With quick setup / tear-down (the scenario maps are all in the ringbound book) but the full gloomhaven experience in terms of player cards / progression, I think this is much more likely to hit the table for me, my wife and my son.

Love gloomhaven, my mate I was meant to be playing it with had a couple of months where he couldn't play, had the next date in my diary, then what happens? Corona. Still waiting for our next game, tabletop simulator sounds expensive, on sale at the mo at half price I believe, £7.49, but then once you've bought access to the programme you have to pay again to play the games, unless its a fan made version?

We've been using tabletopia which is free to play games on, some require a premium membership, but you can get a free month trial, so we are taking turns doing that.

TTS doesn’t have an official DLC version of Gloomhaven so once you’ve bought it (£7.49 is a bargain!) then you just subscribe to the Mod page and it will appear.

Sanctioned by the designer as well so no issue with upsetting copyright etc.

You can also with a bit of work get a game in progress into the state you’re at inside of TTS.

Do you have to play all characters at the same level, or could you have someone dip in and out as you go through?

You could have someone dip in and out, but the first 5 scenarios are designed to introduce the game and gradually shift your hand from ‘easy’ cards to more challenging ones.

I would probably say for new players it’s worth them playing the first five scenarios in full.

I’ve just read a bit more and it looks like the game levels to a tweaked average of the character levels playing, which sounds ideal

Same thing as original, I am however finding the levels more challenging on jaws of the lion, makes sense when theres a lot less

I've been playing the Steam version of Early Access Gloomhaven with my buddy (plus a Zoom call) and it's fantastic. It's a pseudo-campaign version, with the full launch planned for later in the year.

My ageing Mac has been given a new lease of life with the relaunch of Gloomhaven on GeForce Now (£25 for 6 months versus the cost of a new machine).

Played flawlessly last night.
