Bluetooth headphones query

Mrs just got some new earbuds. They successfully paired with her phone and worked the first time she tried them, but since then no sound comes through despite continuing to pair. Only controls on the buds are play/pause and skip - which work, so am baffled by sound issue. Any ideas?

(As noted, I don't think it's anything to do with a setting on her phone because they did initially work)

• Try 'forget' on phone, and then re-pair ?
• When it's paired, do you get the battery-level indicator for the paired device in the status bar ? (This might be dependent on Android version).
• When it's paired, do the phone's volume controls work as if controlling the headphones ?
• When paired, press volume-up and you'll see a dropdown arrow for 3 different phone volumes (bell/note/alarm) that operate independently (again, might be dependent on Android version).
• Any os-related updates available on the play store?
