Clarkson and Hammond did the majority of the voice over during the lap time, perhaps they have realised the American driver doesn't work too well.

Wouldn't surprise me if the character is not there next season, they'll probably announce he died in an accident whilst testing a communist car or something.

Tent sections were dreadfully unfunny as usual but the rest of it was great

Still struggling with the comic elements.

The Barbados section looked lovely and Clarkson chasing the catamaran was great but the comedy bits were cringe worthy.

James May always looks uncomfortable and embarrassed. I used to like the corny scripted bits on Top Gear but on The Grand Tour its just not funny. Perhaps it just needs a better script.

The Grand Tour (2016)

The difference with GT and TG is that the "comedy", "slapstick" elements in TG seemed more organic and when they would screw up there would be an element of realism. Whereas with GT it's all setup and scripted and so fake.

While the Barbados section looked good, it was stupid.

The whole nonsense about Hammond and May going to Scotland and Clarkson "stealing" the camera crew was total ******. Who the **** cares about a ****** saloon Alfa?

Are we to believe that they only have one camera crew?

Still loving them being on screen, but I agree the scripted bits are too false.

But I'd say that was true of the later Top Gear series too.

Yeah I think Top Gear had scripted bits on a level with that reef thing, though possibly with a little more car relevance. But I think we tend to forget them as they weren't that memorable or interesting. Though there was never anything as bad as the Call of Duty or Eco Cars bits of TGT.

That Alfa might drive well, but it sure is hideous. It looks like someone's tried to recreate a current BMW from bad photos & then slapped an Alfa grill on it.

Extremely average episode this week IMHO. Watchable, but largely unmemorable.

Totally agree, later Top Gear was basically a product of "focus group" thinking. People like the cocking about, so we'll cock about more. Nothing wrong with some funny stuff (the first USA episode as an example to New Orleans) but they stopped being natural laughs and then heavily scripted laughs.

At least get some better writers

The front end of that Alpha is utterly atrocious. I can't believe they OK'd it.

If it had looked like these concept pics, well, I'd have definitely been interested.

Meh.

The road trip and two episodes either side really have been the high point so far.

Watchable as ever, but not one of the better episodes. I thought 'Conversation Street' was hilarious, but the bit with the massage seat was highly suspect. It was like they'd sat down & thought about what they couldn't get away with on the BBC.

The Maserati film was OK, apart from May's finale. Once again it felt completely out of character for him & more of a Clarkson thing to do. I was hoping he'd come up with something clever & win.

I suspected he'd go to Jersey and phone them up with much arguing about legality etc.

I really liked it and massage aside thought it was a good and funny ep with a weak ending.

Nail on the head there. Pretty sure that's why Clarkson had that meat-based eco-car, and weighed another car against a stack of dead animals. Just because you can do it, doesn't mean that you should. It certainly doesn't mean it's entertaining.

As you say, this was completely out of character for May. I thought the ending would be:

Also he seemed properly in pain whilst driving.

If the variable quality continues, I suspect that once this series is over, we'll find that they could have taken the best bits and made six or so really strong episodes and a 90 minute special.

It's a pity because I thought they'd really turned a corner with episodes around Xmas and New Year, but of course most of it's been filmed already and I guess it's not being shown in the order they shot it.

Yes now that would have been a proper ending, a pity they had a budget for stunts that they felt they needed to use up...

Clarkson's car was no longer working and May was in no shape to drive home, so it got Truncated off and filled in with Hammond driving about like a loony for no reason, they pretty much admitted they had filmed it 9 months ago so it was probably some of the first stuff in the can.

i thought May would turn about and drive to a british embassy or something as that would be the nearest british soil (i think) and therefore win
