To be honest the only time you realise where they are is when they look out the window to see how the local celebrity is going to die...

Seems like they're just doing the "studio" bits elsewhere so Amazon can promote it in the local market. They did a small local segment in South Africa, but it could have been so much more.

Meanwhile many of the papers have picked up on Hammond's gay "joke" about ice cream and are running stories about it.

Just watched Part 1 - only 44 minutes for this bit, but it's classic road trip stuff so far... no complaints

It got a little samey, but they seemed to be back in spirit. Is it a week until part 2?

Cheers, I noticed the Producer is getting name checked a little now, rather than a man in a white coat handing them a card.

Probably banned by the BBC from saying "The producers..." and using a man in a white coat. I get the feeling that they have seen the restrictions that BBC have placed on them as a challenge to make a programme as similar to Top Gear as possible, without getting sued.

I was very much looking forward to this, and as a big fan of the previous specials, couldn't wait to see what an even bigger budget could produce. However for me part one suffered from what has been the problem in almost every episode thus far, too long on the same thing.

It's weird because throughout all the Top Gear specials I was always left wanting for more, yet this seems the epitome of being careful what you wish for.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it as a whole, but after ten minutes there was very little left to 'see'. We basically got forty five minutes of sand...and not a lot else!

I'm hoping part two will provide a bit more colour and diversity.

The Grand Tour (2016)

You'll gain clarity on seeing pt 2

Which I doubt he did...

Part 1 was superb, old-school Top Gear roadtrip stuff. I think I laughed more in those 44 minutes than I have in the rest of the run so far (& the entire new series of 'proper' TG).

Nice Ice Cold In Alex nod too.

Best episodes yet apart from the whole end sequence which was a bit ridiculous.

This is what the should stick to IMO and ditch all the studio stuff

That's kind of what I thought The Grand Tour would be. Just the big road trip special episodes and none of the usual stuff. Maybe doing that they'd just run out of locations and ideas too quickly.

I think that would end up being too much for them, but maybe two specials per series would work. They have 36 episodes to do across three series.

It definitely seems to be finding the old magic now with this and the pre-Christmas episode, which is good news given how bad some parts of those first five episodes were.

A good solid special episode I thought - not their best road trip ever, but very watchable and some great laughs.

Good part 1, back on form, OH loved the "Ice Cold in Alex" reference. Just wish a little more of this spirit could be disseminated through the series. Some of the challenges veered to much into the territory of the absurd.

Watched both episodes of the "Special" last night.
Best episode yet, but then I always did love the "Specials"

The only real negative I'd say is a slight lack of variety.
We had the Sand, and the Desert and the Buggies, and that's was excellent.

However, that single Gag (for want of a better phrase) was perhaps stretched out a bit too long.
Given the time of the program, I would have liked to have seen a bit more variety or ideas.

It's a minor grumble, but I think I'd struggle to re-watch this in the same way I would one from earlier times on the BBC.
