I got my R1 copy from www.dvdsoon.com for about £15.50 (ex p&p).
Any chance of doing the beginning of chapter 15 too? I think the R1 capture was done as the film was still fading in from black (which is why I needed to brighten it up a bit).

Here we go...
I had to slightly stretch the R2 capture horizontally, as Tippi seemed a tad slimmer than in my R1 capture. Looking at the other comparison image, I think I should have done the same to that too. The colours are different again, although I'm not sure if this is perhaps normal for a NTSC/PAL comparison using DVD software?
[edit] just noticed there's a bit more stool on view in the R2

Cheers for those. Though I've got the R1 anyway, it resolves a question that's been knocking about for ages.
Do you want to post it in Rewind's corrections forum so they have proof that the R2 is pan&scan (which puts doubt on all the others that are possibly open matt)?

Assuming there isn't already a web site detailing Hitchcock DVD's, is there enough interest in here to try setting one up? I'm quite happy to do the coding/development if others want to help with the content of the site.

I'd be happy to contribut in my own little way.
I have most of the Universal R1 Hitch's (Birds, Marnie, Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo), the Criterion box, and a couple of others..
And an obvious obsession with Tippi Hedren...

Before I logged on I just completed watching the DVD {extras** of Psycho {The Birds was yesterday**.
The DVD is amazing!
Only thing against it is the non-anamorphic transfer but I have the R2 also anyway.
But, getting to the point, the making-of is the best I've seen, anywhere. I can't believe how much information they give you. They show, explain and discuss basically every shot in the movie. It's 94 MINUTES long and you literally couldn't ask for more.
And that's just one of the extras on the DVD!

The Movietyme price include delivery & there are no custom charges as they ship from inside the UK!

I think Movietyme have free delivery (at least they did last time I ordered from them). Whether or not customs spot the package is a different question!

Hmm looking at the pics the R2 has more at the top & bottom.
If it was a pan & scan it should have the same length as the R1, very odd.
Im sure I read somswhere that the Birds was NOT shot in the format it appears in the R1, but was adapated to widescreen when they remasterd the print.
I dont supose there are any old farts out there that saw at the pictures when it first come out?
Im very tempted ti buy the new 17 disc R2 boxset as I have a 15% off code to use from them & if I use it it will work out that I can get the boxset for £110 odd.

Many pan&scans are taken from open matt prints, but I'd say the amount of cropping here makes it pan&scan in my book. The 4:3 really should have a lot more height, but then as Rewind suggests, it could be taken from a 1.66:1 open matt (which I find odd, because open matt is surely just a full 35mm frame which is around 1.33:1 I think, and why would it be shot 'matted' at 1.66:1 if it never got shown as that but only in 1.33:1 or 1.85:1  ).

Yonathan - sounds good to me Have you got support for Perl on your server?
I was thinking something along this lines of this:
1. top level - a list of all of Hitchcock's films, along with an indication (maybe just an icon?) of which regions are available.
2. per film - a brief summary, along with any general reviews of the film (i.e. not a DVD review), links to other sites with info/reviews of that film, user submitted scores/comments for the film, etc, along with a list of the various versions of the film that are available on DVD
3. per DVD - cover scan, release details, list of extras, disc specs, screen captures, user submitted scores, comments and reviews of the DVD, links to where to buy(?), links to external reviews of the DVD...
Any other ideas folks?
If someone wants to work on how the site should look, then I'm happy to work on the back end stuff.

...though if you want more, you can always turn to Stephen Rebello's self-explanatory Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of 'Psycho', an entire book on the subject that I suspect would take rather longer than 94 minutes to read out loud!

With a special effects-heavy film like The Birds, the aspect ratio may vary from shot to shot - the 100% live-action footage may well have been shot in 4:3 for matting to 1.85:1, but there's every possibility that the matte work was designed specifically for the 1.85:1 frame - so you'd have to resort to panning-and-scanning to fit those shots into 4:3.
I don't know if this was the case with The Birds, but it has been with other films ( Back to the Future being a case in point).
