VirginMedia - 4k Box - launches 30 November

https://keepup.virginmedia.com/befirst

Given my current tivo boxes have slowed considerably since the most recent OS update, this could be a welcome upgrade. Convincing Mrs Torf that we need a new TV will be considerably harder

Hmm, I need to bin off SKY at Christmas, presumably they'll be a premium for a while

Cost will be interesting.. I feel I'm over paying as it is for what I have, and my Tivo box is also painfully slow at present. On the plus side, my 18 months is up in ~Feb, so I at least have some bargaining power there.

I still haven't upgraded my V+ the Tivo box. I don't want to spend £5 a month of something that sounds as if performs pretty poorly.

Where's the £5 a month and comments that it performs poorly come from?

He means the TiVo box. Which does cost £5 extra, and with the latest updates performs like a dog. The hard drive on mine is on its way out too.

Ahh. Thanks.

I've got an engineer coming round tomorrow to take a look at our two boxes. Will report back on whether it makes a jot of difference. The new OS is cack.

Strip it back and make it clean and speedy.

I hate the new channel icons too.. The old text stuff was simple and immediate, where as know I have to decipher the damn things.

Same here

Getting an engineer around to take a look at it will probably make no difference to the sluggishness of it.

I'll hold out until reviews of new 4k box are in. If not good I'll ditch VM for telly and just use my hd homerun/plex for freeview recordings.

You can change this back to text by pressing the green button in the guide for display options.

There is a software update due before the end of the month that is meant to improve the speed issue on the TiVo.

Just switched to SkyQ as I got a great deal, but have to say that other although the speed and slickness is better, the functionality itself is rather lacking compared to the TiVo. TBH I imagine I'll be switching back to VM and their new 4K box once my year at Sky is up and the deal I've got ends. The fact that it's nearly a month since my broadband was meant to be installed and it still isn't working doesn't help either!

was reading a 'review' spec here

http://www.alphr.com/technology/1004...ky-q-a-run-for

Record 6 and watch a 7th - but with so many catch up services not sure when I'd ever record that many...

£99 or £49 if you're going onto or are on their top spec package. Feels a very attractive price.

That will likely drop to zero within 6 months.

Yep, the new box looks good and not a bad price at all on the top package. Basically all the decent stuff from the TiVo with the addition of 4K and the multi-room\tablet streaming stuff that SkyQ has, plus sounds like it is far faster, to the point that the apps are actually usable!

Certainly intend to switch back to VM once my contract with Sky is up (46 weeks to go!).

As a Harmony user, the change to an RF remote is a bit of a pain. I wonder if it can be controlled via WiFi.

Oh. Hadn't thought about that. That will be a pain.
Nice to see that existing recordings on current Tivo can be copied across to new box.

It can be controlled by IR as well, someone on the VM forums has confirmed it works fine with their Harmony remote.

Also, should be controllable by Wi-Fi the same as the current TiVo, as it is the same software and uses the same VM app with remote control feature.

I got the V6 installed today. It all seems quite nippy but other than that it's a DVR and does the job.

Looks like existing customers can get this now for a £20 activation fee. I've got them coming round to install it on Friday.
