You can indeed. Go to Network > System and then you can change network settings. You have to assign a static IP first so I just reserved one on my router for this device. Then it allows you to set the DNS servers

That makes it a much more interesting device now will have to see how well XMBC runs for local content to see if it is worth a punt.

Well I went into network settings and am now watching Monsters University on Netflix Netherlands on my UK Fire TV.

Found a couple of good guides for those of you who like to tinker with such things:

Installing XBMC onto your Fire TV:

Installing US,UK, German apps on your Fire TV:

Might allow it to update (which I had blocked) in case the update is actually a genuine bug fix
Finally got around to allowing the box to update to latest firmware and XBMC is now working (without re-installing, but having cleared the application cache).

Appears it was a recognized issue with the UK launch firmware.

Presumably no root options for anyone with UK device?

Has anyone got llama to work perfectly? I can't find the recommended app on App Store (Classic TV) so tried a couple of random ones. The process works well until I exit spmc and then it reboots back into spmc.

Anyone found a perfect sacrificial app?

Anyone else get lip sync issues with xbmc on this? I think the video stutters a little as well (I'm very picky though). Latest firmware and latest Gotham release of xbmc.

Plex seems to run fine though although I can't seem to fast forward 30 seconds for some reason.

I just press the Home button to come out of XBMC. If I exit it restarts as you said.

That was going to be the original plan before the FireTV came along, he's used to using the xbmc setup round ours while on babysitting duties so it would have been ideal if it could have been used with a USB drive!

Might well be interested in a trade, what version WD live is it ?

Hi

It's this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005...&robot_redir=1

I'm sure it's the most current and it's brilliant. That sald I've never installed xbmc on it and, if Thats what your dad wants, I'm not even sure if xbmc exists for this wdtv.

You can't install XBMC on a WDTV, unless you go down the road of installing custom firmware and stuff I don't think. I don't think it's impossible but it's not straightforward.

I finally got to have a look at what it has to offer after having it in the flat for about a week, and I have to say I'm really impressed with the picture quality when streaming using Amazon Instant Video. It might be my eyes playing tricks, but it looks better than when I play it through my PS4!

Netflix works well, but not quite as smooth or quick as the PS4 or PS3 versions of the app.

Are you still after one, as I'm thinking of letting mine go? Not interested in making a profit so it would be cost (49) + postage.

You're better installing SPMC instead of XBMC. It's a (near) straight clone of XBMC but is available to buy in the Amazon app store.

As a genuine fire app it has a real icon in your recent list, the exit works fine, and the default fire screensaver kicks in when it's left (so you don't need root to do this like with XBMC).

One minor issue. Even though is on the app store it won't let you install it to the fire tv. So, you buy it (its free) then sideload the apk. After you run it once from the settings menu it will appear in your recent apps list.

It's spmc which I'm using and it doesn't populate the recent list wh n it's been used.

Did you 'buy' the app from the same Amazon account the fire is linked to, and did you 'sync Amazon content' from 'my account' under 'settings'?

No. The spmc on Amazon says it's not compatible with my kindle nor the tv. I'll try and download anyways!

It's the action of buying the app (which you don't actually download from the store) in the amazon store which ties it to your amazon account. Re-syncing your account on the Fire then 'ties' the sideloaded app to the one you 'bought', and the item acts like a normally installed app (except it doesn't appear in the app list, only the recent items list).

Thanks for that, did have Llama launching SPMB 'via' Flixster, but now have it on the Recent Items list

EDIT: Hmm, using the same principle, I wonder if there's a decent 'launcher' app we can sideload?!
