Liking the device so far, though I am just a 'dumb user' and am not doing anything clever with it yet.

When I am watching the iPlayer through the box, I find that sometimes its a bit 'stuttery', a bit jerky during fas movement or panning. Anyone else find this?

I've been meaning to find out how the iPlayer work, I assume that any interface goes to the same back end structure, as I find different interfaces give me different results.

It's not the same device but I find that when watching iPlayer on my blu-ray player. It seems to be ebecause the blu-ray player is outputting in 60Hz for some reason.

I'm finding the same stuttery effect, and the light flickering, when watching netflix and Amazon also.

Are there any settings I can change on the device? I had a quick poke around and could not see anything obvious...its the stutering and dimming isnt too bad but I have gone back to my WD device to watch iPlayer.

cheers

Hi Mike,

There is a hidden menu for changing the resolution, you could maybe give that a go :

My device is set to Auto at the moment, though in the menu I can choose 60hz or 50hz....would changing this make any difference?

The flickering light levels is very distracting...the scenes in the boat in last weeks The Missing were hard to follow....

cheers

I'll spend some time at the weekend experimenting, the 'dimming light' thing is annoying, I used to have the same problem with my NowTV box, but I dont have it now that I watch NowTV through an Apple TV box.

I dont have the problem if I watch iPlayer through either my WD or Youview boxes, so it must be a setting somewheres.....

cheers

I now have 2 of these boxes and have installed SPMC on each of them successfully. What I can't work out though is why one of them won't show SPMC in the "recents". Grrrrrr.

I have changed my display setting from Auto to 1080/50hz, I'll see if that makes a difference. I'm not sure what setting the frequency to 50hz will actually do?

cheers

Hey. Have read through this thread but would someone be kind enough to confirm that this device is all good for Netflix region switching via unblock us? Can't seem to find out one way or another. You can access the DNS settings in the wifi set up as per other devices?

If ok, will get this for a 'wife friendly' device for a secondary TV in our home (she's not coping well with the Chromecast).

Yes, it works fine with unblock us but only when wired. You can't change the DNS on wifi.

There are instructions below on how to change the DNS :

Great, thanks. Have a homeplug behind the tv where I intend it to go, so that should be ok.

Making this change removed the stuttering picture, and mostly got rid of the flickering light levels, but anything I watch on Amazon has an unnatural quality, the colours seem over saturated and the picture has an odd quality to it,..watching Ripper Street almost makes me feel queasy. I've no idea what else I can adjust, maybe my TV is not up to the job for some reason.

Cheers

Lovefilm Instant used to encode everything in PAL 25fps/50hz so if Amazon does that also that might explain why switching to 1080/50 helped.

As for the other stuff, have you made sure all motionplus/motion enhancement features are turned off on your TV? As what you're describing sounds a little like the side effects of those features on LCD screens. Maybe you have the FireTV on a new input and forgot to disable them.

Something I've discovered recently whilst watching older TV shows is the FireTV/XBMC is absolutely awful at playing avi files. All jittery with poor audio sync. Apparently switching off hardware acceleration improves it, though I've not tried it yet (instead I'll probably just convert or re-acquire what I have to x264 MKV as I don't want to be changing settings constantly).

Quick question for a friend, if she uninstalls a service e.g. netflix on her amazon fire box will that cancel her subscription for her, or does she have to go onto amazon on a pc to get to subscriptions to cancel it? Was trying to help her yesterday and was surprised to find that although it was easy to setup various services for her on the box it doesn't make it obvious how long her free trial had been running for (couldn't find that info anywhere) or how to stop the subscription. The nearest I got was going into applications which then gave us a weblink that she then has to look up on a PC.

So easy to join but not so easy to cancel when your free trial ends (she's got the main one & netflix at mo), as it looks quite expensive, that you'll be charged for each package individually that you install unlike a group deal.

Uninstalling the app won't stop the trial.

For Amazon she'll have to cancel the Prime trial via her Amazon account (on amazon.co.uk).

For Netflix, unless you can do it from the app in some way (which is unlikely, but I don't use it so can't check) she'll have to cancel by logging in to her account on netflix.com.

I'm loving the Amazon box, it's great having one device for netflix, prime and XMBC/Kodi.

The only trouble I'm having now, is getting that pesky Kodi icon to work properly, once I've done that, it'll be great.

I had a problem with playback in Kodi, it was just a click of a button to turn of mediacode in the accelartion menu and it's all good now, no jitters.
