So, just checking.

The TV is a Samsung. It has optical. It's fed with Amazon fire, Sky and Xbox via HDMI

I keep reading that it won't pass through 5.1 using Optical if the input is HDMI.

But, I don't really care, all I want it to do is pass through SOUND. It will do that right?

Yep.

I have a Samsung TV with PS4, Sky, Apple TV and Blu-ray player all connected via HDMI. Playbar is connected via Optical.

Sounds bloody marvelous

Have had a Playbar for around 9 months now and although it's a nice bit of kit it's never truly blown me away in my home set up. Demoing it in a shop was a different story, but when you factor in neighbours and vibration levels I've never really been able to enjoy it as much as I'd like.

I've since bought a Play 5 and paired it to create a bit of balance on the other side of my room and I'm pretty blown away by how well they work together.

I'm not sure if it's the true play voodoo that Sonos employ or just the way the speaker is engineered but even at low volumes the clarity and subtle bass frequencies are really impressive. I love a bit of bass, who doesn't?, but it's always been a struggle to find a balance that didn't muddy the trebles or be obnoxious. I'm listening to an old familiar album right now, with great stereo separation from one side of the room to the other and the snare drums sound crisp and clear, the bass is subtly balanced in the background, and it's at a nice volume but at a level that I know isn't annoying anyone.

Itching to get some Play 1's now to dot around the house.

Does anyone know if it's the 1's or 3's next due for a facelift?

How have you paired the Playbar with a Play:5? I didn't think that was a valid configuration....

I've now got a Playbar and while it's not as good as the full on 5:1 system I have had in the past, it's way less hassle. I have a bunch of other Sonos speakers about, but while I've tried them as surrounds, I think they're much more useful in other rooms!

The Play 3 is, for me, a pointless speaker. 2 x 1's are much better solution.

Sorry, poor word choice on my part. I basically meant that they're grouped together for music. It did give me an option of pairing two Play 5s as surrounds if I had two.

2 x 3 is way better than 2 x 1...

Grouping them (in the same room) gives a rather odd effect sometimes, but I have heard it be fairly effective with the right balance settings.

I've got paired Play:3's and a friend who has a new model Play:5 thinks they sound better. I love mine, but then I was lucky enough to get one much reduced from an outlet and the other with Amex points...

Well, my playbar is on the way. It will take something to avoid setting it before Xmas day.

In the end I set it up before Xmas day and because of BT's silly home hub had me tearing my (non existent) hair out. Silly smart hub was switched on and that prevents anything without a screen logging into the system. Sorted after I realised.

It's immense.

In the meantime we had a leak downstairs which saw me move the Play 5 to the bedroom, a smaller room than the kitchen and, wow. So when that goes back downstairs I'm going to put two Play 1's in the bedroom and make that the audio room.

Not yet, asfaik. But they need to get a shift on, because there is plenty of tech coming on the market which rivals what Sonos does just without the nice speaker attached.
