Derren Brown: Hero at 30,000 Feet

Not seen a thread for this yet?

It's on at the moment on C4

Quote:
Derren Brown, the acclaimed psychological illusionist, returns to Channel 4 for an amazing 70 minute special on Wednesday 8th September at 10pm.
Hero at 30,000 Feet takes an ‘average Joe’ on an extraordinary psychological journey which will culminate with him facing a life-changing decision of whether to take control of a Boeing 737 packed with passengers, which he believes is about to fall out of the sky.

One of Brown's better shows, I'm sure we've all had that dream of being the one that steps up and saves the day.

I thought the actual 'event' was pretty poor TBH, if I were Derren I would have made it so the trip to the 'gameshow' involved connecting flights so the first flight went smoothly then it all went tits up on the second.

And it was wasn't live except for Derren stood in a hangar at Leeds Bradford

I thought that was rubbish really. I know it is fake but they didn't even try to make it realistic. It was stop start stop start. I found it ridiculous that they would get literally anyone to fly the plane when they don't know how to fly. No co-pilot either....

Considering Derren likes to go around debunking fakers, his overuse of hypnotism is disappointing because its crap. You honestly think someone could be oblivious that the plane lands, he deplane, they get to a simulator etc all without him never being aware of his surroundings? Everyone had time to change too.

Yeah, the build-up advert was a bit misleading. Obviously no airline would allow a complete pilot newbie to land a 737, whether pre-recorded or live. But what annoyed me is that total auto pilot was on right until the final 100 or so metres from the runway, so all he had to do was bring down the wheels and pull back!
But I guess the whole show was about picking up the courage to stand up in a situation like that... I guess I'm just jealous he got to have a go on that simulator. But as Saber said, I'm sure Derren wouldn't have found it hard to hypnotrain him (see what I did there?) to properly land a plane during the build up...

That's what I thought too, its like his going back on his original persona of exposing fakes. The whole thing was surely pure fiction with the main guy being it on it too, obviously you're not going to tie someone to the train tracks, they could have at least tried to make it believable.

I used to enjoy these type of shows (especially the one where he got people to rob the security van) but rapidly gone off them now.

One thing I couldn't get over tonight was the amount of high-quality footage of him in his street and around the area, without him noticing. And how the sound on the doorsteps of all of his neighbours was crystal clear - was every doorstep in the street mic-ed up or are directional mics really that good these days?

Total fiction obviously but as a TV show I really enjoyed it. Much better than the events/lottery fiasco. He's redeemed himself on this one IMO

My brother lives on the cul de sac that this was filmed on (I think hes directly opposite the house) From what was shown on the programme and what he told me I'm pretty sure the countdown clock had some timing issues

Looked a right old load of ******** to me!

The countdown clock did make my chuckle at how arbitrary it was. How lucky that there was only 4 seconds left. Not as if they could have affected it in post production.

Quite laughable! Like you'd go into someone's house if you happened to find their keys, especially a copper And use all the 'party' stuff. I didn't see the band in the back of that van

Also co pilot, otto pilot, etc etc.

Of course he just uses suggestible people, I went to an audition for DB few years ago, couldn't hypnotizer me

This was the only part I watched - the only amazing thing was that the clock didn't stop on 0:07 like all good hero clocks do

My wife watched it all and could not believe that he could not have noticed the filming.

Believable or not, he doesn't just pick anyone for this stuff - there is a selection process in order to get the right person who he know will pretty much play ball the whole way through.

Yea, even if you are susceptible to being hypnotised, it still won't stop you constantly being on alert mode for what Derren is going to do (if you've been chosen).

I'm pretty sure if you saw a Jack In The Box on your doorstop you'd know straight away who's done it. Also the numerous blacked out vans with giant boom mic's parked outside the house when you are leaving for work!

As for the train part, it was obviously heavily edited. If you watched the few shots of the train, you'd see if was actually going pretty damn slow - probably took a good 15 minutes to travel a few hundred metres :P

indeed - when you saw the train rushing passed it was definitely going a different speed to the one he'd been waiting for on the track
