I'm glad you can now ignore me, I'm sure your life will be improved.

I see he has a new book out I wont be reading. I shall spend the time reading Iain Banks' new one instead.

I really enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, haven't read any of his other books though.

I just read the 2 articles on the 20 errors, and the Guardian sneerathon. Quite amusing, but have an incredible air of superiority about them. There's nothing wrong with a lot of those 20 examples IMHO.

Apart from showcasing his staggering literary incompetence that is.

Uh-huh. 'Staggering literary incompetence.'

Well he must be doing something right to have sold as many books as he has done!

I didn't say he wasn't popular - he clearly is, and good luck to him - but he has no talent *at all*. He's the literary equivalent of Paris Hilton.

He's badly researched (laughably so in many cases), he mangles the english language to such a degree that he clearly doesn't even understand the meaning of many of the words he uses and he's now repeated the same book three times showing a distinct lack of imagination. Finally, he is responsible for "digital fortress" - possibly the worst thing ever written.

He doesn't sell books because he's good - he sells books because he's well known, and he's well known because he generated hype claiming TDVC was based on fact - when it was instead based on utterly terrible research and wishful thinking.

Those are all fair points, and as I've only read The Da Vinci Code, I can't comment that all his books are very similar in plot. The only point I disagree with is that 'he mangles the english language to such a degree that he clearly doesn't even understand the meaning of many of the words he uses...'

I certainly didn't pause reading TDVC at any point to say to myself 'hmm, that phrase seemed really awkward!' - it's obviously his writing style, and when the dialogue and prose flow so quickly, you tend to skip over any misuse of the English language.

Another of my points I made earlier was that the writer of the '20 errors in Dan Brown's books' comes across as incredibly snobbish and derogatory for the sake of it. 2 examples that spring to mind were Sophie Neveu's getting the mileage per gallon wrong of the car (perhaps she just didn't know?) and the creepy voice just 15 feet away (which, in the context of a bloody huge museum that's supposedly empty, is pretty damn close!)

Anyway, his popularity can't be argued - I think we're just disagreeing on his use of the English language.

I'm guessing the majority of people that recently purchased The Lost Symbol did so because they thought TDVC was good. I find the vitriol aimed at Brown quite funny at times.

yep, i can't imagine you'd buy TLS if you hadn't already got and read and enjoyed the ones before.
