BT Home hub - Ethernet connection?

got a bit of a problem with this and was hoping someone could help me out.

i normally connect to my home hub with a USB cable but i now want to use the ethernet port. unfortunately my pc wont recognize the connection. my pc has no drivers for its ethernet port, or so the device manager tells me. i've tried installing them from the bt home hub disc that came with the hub but it says it can't find any. i've also tried my xp installation disc but again nothing.

i'm using a cat5 cable but i'm unsure if it's crossover or t'other one. does that even matter?

any advice on how to get drivers for my ethernet hole?

thanks.

tried letting it search on the internet for it ?
Is this a brand name pc or a bits and pieces one ?
If the former then look on the manufacturers website. if the latter then try and identify the motherboard by opening up and looking for a manufacturer name and board name and look on their website
