Robert Rodriguez's Barbarella

From Empire

Quote:
Since Grindhouse debuted Stateside, Robert Rodriguez has been talked about for, by our count, seventeen thousand and three other films to follow it up. But it seems that one film has emerged into the lead, leaving the others in the shade and in its dust. Yes, today's news is that Rodriguez is set to helm Barbarella, a remake of the cult '60s sci-fi starring Jane Fonda, as his next film.

The original, for those of you who have only seen the Kylie video homage, sees Barbarella (originally Jane Fonda), a 41st century astronaut, charged with stopping the evil Durand Durand, whose schemes threaten the galactic peace. Her quest leads her to the city of Lythion, where a new sin is invented every hour and Barbarella must brave lesbians, angels and orgasmatrons to bring her prey to justice. Yes, really. Along the way, her already minimal costume gets further shredded, and cinemagoers around the world held their breath to see how much tinier it could get.

Rodriguez is writing this remake with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the scriptwriters of the last three Bond films, who have just finished work on Bond 22. Rodriguez is promising an R-rated adventure, with edge rather than camp, and has said that this is likely to be his next film. It's being produced by legendary director Dino De Laurentiis, who also produced the original film for director Roger Vadim way back in 1968. There's no word yet on whether there'll be a Fonda cameo (we highly doubt it) but we'd be less surprised if, say, Rose McGowan turns up in the lead. But whoever's naughty bits are covered by the artfully placed opening credits, it should be a stylish piece of space porn - sorry, opera.
R-Rated
Edge rather than camp.

Well there would be no point in doing a camp remake as I can't imagine it would offer anything new. If you have to do a remake at least make it differ significantly from the original.

yeah, the norm is to make a much worse film. Still, I'll keep an open mind until I've the leading lady selected and unclothed.

If this is r-rated, had guaranteed nudity & a leading-lady that has never got her puppies out before, this movie will make zillions .......

Jessica Alba perhaps?

I just wish Rodriguez would do something a little different

does he HAVE to make films at 100mph

how about maturing a little, and making a film for grown-ups (not for the teenager popcorn crowd)

(same goes for Kevin Smith)

maybe I've just become a grumpy old man

Not sure how this is going to work out though. The original was a kinda 'tease' film, I'm not sure I trust Rodriguez to not have Barbarella in a micro bikini within the first 15 minutes.

Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux hardly lit up the joint, did they? I can't see much box office nowadays in vapid sexy lady SF.

Is this so much a remake of the movie, or more another adaptation of the original comic strip? If it's the latter it could be seriously interesting, though I'm less convinced now that RR is on board (not one of my fave directors).

Knowing RR, he'll try & do something "clever" like getting Simon Le Bon to play the evil Duran Duran.

As long as she has an assault weapon instead of a leg, I'll be happy.

As long as his bestest mate Quentin doesn't get an 'acting' cameo, I'll be happy.

Sorry. As much as I love many of Rodriguez's films, this is just plain wrong (as always with these remakes)

Though obviously because of Rodriguez's graphic novel connections I can see why he'd be the choice for Barbarella (being originally a comic itself apparently), but political correctness will prevent this being even half of what the original film was especially with America's obsession with sex.

Also I wouldn't guarantee just because of his name that it's going to be any good. Spy Kids 2 & 3D anyone? In fact the last really decent film he's done was From Dusk Till Dawn and that's over 10 years old. Sin City was nicely stylish to look at but nothing special (though maybe because I'm not a comic book fan, sorry 'Graphic Novel' ).

My mate used to be a big fan of Fonda and had heard she 'got them out' in Barbarella, so when he heard it was on TV, he settled down to watch it, but he went and made a cup of Tea while the opening credits were on!

Then complained later he never saw anything!!!!! Ha ah ah ha ha ha
