I think the VAR system should be there to assist the referee when asked for. There are many occasions when decisions are given incorrectly because the ref was unsighted and so couldn't be sure, so in that instance it could be useful. However, neither the Ref or the linesman gave the offside...and remember, the linesman had a perfect view...so in this instance it had no place to be brought in. If the linesman is going to be over-ruled in every instance then why have them at all, there is really no point to them (...been saying that for years though haven't we ). The system is clearly not ready to be rolled out to every game in the English league so I think a lot more testing (...behind the scenes) should go on. Yesterday was farcical and I very much doubt Maureen would have been quite so calm and pragmatic about it had the result hinged upon the disallowed goal!

There was a tweet this morning that claimed when VAR is in use the linesmen have been told to not flag if it is a close call on the basis that VAR will pick it up

That kind of makes sense, because you don't want the linesman incorrectly flagging for offside when a goal could have been scored

How long did Cantona get for assaulting a fan? I assume Aguero will get similar????

As much as I love Le Roi, this is in no way similar; Cantona left the playing field and assaulted a fan, Aguero was on the pitch and the fan entered his 'domain'.

Nothing like the same thing, I’m not sure if you are taking the Mick. I’m sure there are lots of examples of players being approached on the pitch, and then having a scuffle or giving them a clip round the ear - use that as a barometer for punishment. I’m not sure it even warrants any punishments, or if it does it’s a 4 match ban max.

More pertinent question - what punishment did Cloughie receive?

Best player, based on what, reputation? Sanchez not showed much this evening. This is a typical away European performance - it’s pretty ugly, but let’s not pretend we didn’t play like this under Fergie.

It's only a bad result if you don't win the home leg

So we have to wait until we see the result of the home game, before we know if we played good or bad last night.

We were pathetic, most on the radio & forums thought the same.

The majority of comments I've seen have said it was "anti-football", not pathetic, just very defensive. I'm 100% sure that José went out with the sole aim to get a clean sheet, which he did.

A good or bad result is dependent on how well or how poorly you play. City played well against Wigan, but it was a bad result.

My word was pathetic, many were non complementary or worse. This is not the way to win the Champions league.

isn't that how he won it with Porto and Inter?

I don't like it btw.

That's what you get with Mourinho, not sure why you'd expect anything else
In 2 legged cup ties it's all about getting through and he has a pretty good record of doing just that.

He’s just lucky he’s got de Gea for the moment. He’d be losing these games whilst playing horribly if it weren’t for him.
