Alita: Battle Angel (2018) - Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron

Looks interesting but I'm not sold on the CGI. Which seems to be all too familiar a story these days.

All looks fine to me, though there are some on teh interweb who hate the "uncanny valley" big eyes.

All of the non-actor characters look like what they are, which is computerised additions to the scene.

Whereas something like District 9 blends the CGI elements seamlessly, this looks very jarring to me.

Absolutely moronic decision to make the main character "big eyes" and no-one else, as alreay mentioned it makes her look incredibly phoney and creates an instant uncanny valley effect. American filmmakers just don't seem to understand anything about anime and always **** things up in the translation, I expect this to bomb just as badly as GITS did.

Just looks weird to me. With James Cameron backing this I still have some hope that it will turn out decent.

Just back from seeing an advanced screening of this in IMAX 3D.
Absolutely loved it. Great 3D (but I don't normally do 3D). CGI is great and strangely we suffered no uncanny valley effect despite the eyes (actually liked the eyes to be honest).
Story is very much a part one affair and nothing you haven't seen before but has you rooting for Alita from the start.
Really hope there's a sequel or two.

The CGI in the final trailer still looks ropy to me. Lots of overly smooth and flat textures, like a PlayStation cut scene.

Really enjoyed this a lot better than I expected.

No issues with the eyes have to say they did a great job of making her character very "human".

I enjoyed this a lot. The effects are stunning throughout, especially Alita who looks very convincing & believable. Beautiful action choreography that utilises slo-mo at the right moments to let you really appreciate what is going on. Even the 3D was well done, with some nice depth to the future city backdrops & plenty of in-your-face scenes during the action. Only issues are we have seen most of it all before & it just feels like they've scratched the surface with the main storyline. I hope it does well so we can see more of the story play out...

Unfortunately Cineworld let me down again as they totally messed up the 3D during the first 10 minutes of the movie. It was just a blurry mess & it took over a dozen people leaving the hall to find someone to complain to, before the movie was paused, then went to black for a minute or so & then returned correctly in 3D, but just continued from where it was paused, rather than re-started, so basically I've no clue what happened in those opening minutes....

I'm in a different list. The big eyes have put me off, not because of uncanny valley but because it highlights the whitewashing. Asian culture love western eyes and thus always create things with big eyes. However Alita is no longer asian so therefore she shouldn't have big eyes.. hopefully the script may cover it with her creator being a manga fan or such like.

Have you seen it? It's addressed in the movie.

Aye, it's also a good way of showing that she is "alien" or at least unusual and not quite like anyone else she meets, be they fully human or cyborg.

IIRC it's the same in the anime, and the manga with her look being different to any of the others she encounters on the ground, or in the air after being rescued/rebuilt.

I don't think you missed anything, the ending suggested she had a purpose and was following it quite successfully.

Phew, glad it is not just me then who seems to make the complete opposite conclusion, portrayed in the ending, than scoobyood

Saw this tonight, and loved it. Really got me emotionally.
Would have liked a better ending, but hopefully it will lead to a sequel.

Did like this, action is great, Alita is great and the effects pretty much faultless..

Ending was disappointing though, it doesn't make much sense given her supposed invincibility.

The boyfriend guy was a complete wet noodle..... it's like he walked into the wrong studiom, he should have been heading into a Nickelodeon tween drama. Could not care less if, at any given moment, he was eviscerated.

On the evisceration front, the film is surprisingly violent! Was great!
