I think you've got your ITV channels mixed up. That is more like ITV3. If my wife could understand streaming then she (along with her Mum) would be the ideal customer for this.

I think I had read somewhere that it was ITV that was at the forefront of BritBox due to the fall in their advertising revenue. So maybe if it is a success then we could say goodbye to ITV3 and the Professionals on IV4.

Probably. I've only see them whilst scanning through channels, but I actually removed them from my hdhomerun as I never watch them

Hmm.... My son was wanting to watch Spooks so I thought I could buy it on iTunes or Amazon, or at the least pick up a box set cheap. They might even be on the iPlayer... But no, only a couple of series are available to buy which I thought was a bit strange.

Until today when the penny dropped - they’re all on Brit Box. That’s definitely going to make me watch them via some legal method right?

What a pain in the *%€!

There’s a free month’s trial available so I guess that’s the way to do it. Sign up, binge, then cancel. Instead of just, you know, giving them some money in return to watch something.

I wonder how many subscriptions they have, and how many of them continue past the free trial period (same for Disney+ etc.)

It's not more choice though is it? It's like the football thing. The point is supposed to be that there is competition, but in reality it's just a string of monopolies. This stuff used to be on netflix, now it isn't. So if you want to watch the same amount of stuff, you need to buy both

Not a great start, downloaded the app to Apple TV. Shows played sound but no video. Restart and it’s the same. Remove app, reinstall and it works.

Ten minutes in to show, the video hangs but audio continues. Need to restart episode.....

No consolation, but the Apple TV+ app works perfectly on my new Samsung TV

It’s an actual Apple TV rather than the app and this is the first time I can remember strange issues like this with an app on it. Anyway, free Spooks!

Hmmm, doesn’t seem to be great at remembering where you were on shows when you go back to finish it. The thumbnail seems to show it remembers you were watching the show, but dumps you back in at the start.

Turns out my wife loves Britbox and is aghast at the prospect of it being cancelled in a few weeks time. Its part nostalgia for her and also there's lots of stuff like Midsomer Murders on it which is pure catnip to her.

Yes, they're dotted all over the place, there's always one on. I think she likes the fact she can just put any episode on at any time.

I guess the way I'm thinking about it is that in isolation, its probably worth a fiver a month if I look at what's available there and the likelihood of someone in the house watching enough content each month.

But in the grand scheme of things, its another fiver a month on top of everything else. The market seems to be getting more fragmented every few months and I find myself wishing for simpler times where I could just go and buy something physical to watch and keep.

Or maybe this really is the time to stop paying the license fee as I would struggle to say we watch any live TV now.

As has been mentioned, its like the football, where the theory is more competition is good, but its the punters who end up paying more.

There are only so many subs per month that people will be prepared to pay, even at “only a fiver”.

It’s just going to encourage people to just get stuff for free, especially when it’s so easy to do.

I’d rather buy stuff to own, be it on disc or digitally. Netflix, Sky and Amazon will do for me, plus ATV+ for maybe a couple of months a year to catch up on the likes of For All Mankind and The Morning show. Certainly won’t be signing up for Britbox or Disney, or anything else that might come along.

Same here.

This is going to be a huge problem for all the new streaming services popping up in the future.

People will just keep a couple of subscriptions to their most used services and either just pirate the rest or just binge watch for a month.

It makes even less sense to me when they remove stuff from sale, presumably so you’ll subscribe to Britbox to watch the likes of Spooks.

I don’t see why it can’t still be available on iTunes/Amazon etc... for those that want to own it and be on Britbox for those that are happy to stream.

It won’t last, normal people won’t go beyond Netflix, Prime and Disney+, the rest will drop off when they see the business model is flawed

Agreed. How much money is it going to cost them to find out? You would’ve thought they might have had someone crunching numbers and doing research before launching.

Disney, I can see for maybe families with kids who endlessly watch Disney stuff over and over, but there’s only so many times you can watch Marvel or SW stuff.

No way I’m signing up to Starzplay or whatever it’s called, even though I’d quite like to watch Mr Mercedes. Same goes for other stuff. I’ll wait until suck a time as it may be released on disc, if it ever is and watch it then, or just not bother. It’s not like there’s not a ton of other stuff to watch.
