Enjoying Pike a lot - he's the real lead. Not sure why it's being shown as letterbox 2.35:1

I agree about Pike. Bin Burnham off back to her prison cell and let Pike/Saru run the show.

Burnham is the new Wesley Crusher - Someone who many MANY years after the series has finished still invokes murderous feelings in fans

Oddly, when I re-watched TNG recently after a couple of decades break, I found Wes a lot less annoying than I remembered. He does, at least, have a character arc throughout the series.
Conversely, the scenes with the Traveller gazing at him longingly were far creepier!

After the first couple of seasons, Wesley definitely becomes a pretty decent character. I always loved 'Final Mission', 'The Game' and 'The First Duty'.

I agree regarding Pike. He's got more charisma than the rest of the Discovery crew put together.

They switched to 2.40:1 ratio to make the show look more cinematic & show off their large sets & it works for me...

I have to say I wasn't a fan of the idea of 2.40:1 when it was announced but it looks great in screen. Although I can understand some people not being keen, on smaller screens to do lose a lot of picture size.

Episode 2 was absolutely superb, really liked it, hope we get more like this.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are some muppets out there that will complain to Netflix that they refuse to pay for those black bars of nothingness & want a reduction to their monthly fee...

You see the question in forums all the time.

"How do I get rid of the black bars on my TV"

The answer is simple. Crop the ends off the picture and zoom in on what's left, so you're missing about 1/3 of it.

Or

Just stretch it so everyone looks tall and weird.

The third less desirable alternative is to leave it alone and actually watch it how the director and cinematographer intended. This also has the effect of leaving my sanity intact as I can't understand how nearly 20 years after widescreen TV's became normal that people still don't understand the principle of Aspect Ratio.

We used to watch 2.35:1 videos on 4:3 tvs back in the day, of course. Now that was a lot of lost screen real estate!

Who can forget this advert?

That's a bit harsh most people probably don't know anything about the technical side of movie making. While I always watch OAR I can completely understand why others may not. Even on a 40" screen you lose a lot of real estate. You need to be around 55" to really appreciate a wider AR.

If I ever see people stretching or zooming the screen to fill it, I can't help but lecture them on aspect ratios. Which they LOVE.

I understand people don't "get" the technical side of AR.

But the principle is simple. If you have a treasured photograph of your partner or family and it's nearly square and you put it in a rectangular frame do you:-

A. Put a border around it so it fits the frame properly.
B. Stretch the photo so your beloved looks like a circus freak.
C. Put the frame on its side and chop their heads and legs off and zoom in on the centre.
D. Cut your least favourite children off the ends of the picture, after all, there's a reason you stuck them on the edges of the frame. Then you can enlarge the picture of the people you really like and it will take up more of the frame.

It's obvious the bars are needed to display the picture properly if you remove them it's going to mess the picture up.
