Yeah, they all do.

Actually playing some records at the mo (day off). I have a old Technics SL23 that I picked up second hand. Great condition, but does suffer with some pitch problems (hardly surprising for a mid-1970s turntable), so I'll be getting someone to replace the caps at some point.

SL23 >> Rega Fono Mini A2D >> Yamaha RX-V3900 [pure direct mode] >> XTZ 99.36 speakers.

Currently spinning:

Plus is the vinyl existing stuff or planning to buy new as if old then if its not all LPs at 33 1/3 then factor in that the turntables these days at higher prices don't have user friendly speed changing requiring that you flip the belt up and down or in one case remove the platter.
I'd consider the Audio Technica LP60 as it has a built in phono stage, isn't too expensive and is easy to use according to this. You can buy it locally and return it if there are issues unlike the lenco
Would be older stuff. Dad has 1000s that he has collected over last 60 years.
The newsest would be the Scott walker vinyl collection from a few years back that I got him, however I would be quite keen on getting some of the new Beatles releases.

Turns out we have a set of speakers and a CD player with AUX input at home, I think its a Marantz thing from years ago... So in theory I could pick up a turntable and one of those Pro-Ject Phono Boxes and use those to get started.

I think.....

Thanks for all the info, I've ordered an LP60 turntable. At that cost its perfect for me to give things a go and see how I get on.

I am now wondering about a budget amp which is bound to be better than what I have in this one Marantz one.... Not sure I have much to lose by just looking at reviews and picking up something from Richer Sounds. Or maybe eBay is a better bet. I guess this is where my afternoon and money could just disappear....

What's wrong with your marantz amp? It's quite a decent brand for amps. What model is it? Might be worth doing some research and could save you some money.

Yeah, at least give it a try (can't get cheaper than free) before shelling out more dosh.

Oh I definitely will. It is really really old and is one of those combined CD players and amps which was part of a small mini-separates system - bundled with some Mission speakers. So yes, it will definitely work and I am strangely excited about getting it all hooked up, but I can see me wanting to change it although I guess its a slippery slope!

Cool!

Old does not mean bad. Some audiophiles are into vintage gear. Hell I was still using an amp from the 80s until recently and served me well.

Marantz and Mission are both big names in audiophile world

Stupid work....

nearly good to go, just need to cable up the speakers. I don't have a big selection, but I have found the first two records I ever bought - Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes and Tight Fit's The Lion Sleeps Tonight (I was seven at the time)... But I think it will be a bit of Nirvana up first.

Am planning a trawl round the shops tomorrow to pick up a few things from my past.

My first records were all the singles from The Goodies.

I haven't bought much vinyl over the last year or so until recently. I got new speakers last week and I've already bought a few since, including £60 for The Pixies - Doolittle

My daughter was watching with great interest when I was putting it together and finally asked if this was what people used in the old days to listen to cds? She'd seen them in cartoons and movies, but was wondering where the big trumpet thing attached....

There's something so cathartic about sitting down and listening to an album all the way through like that. I remember when my dad used to just sit down at night when we'd gone off to bed and do that. Listening habits have just changed so much over the years - I guess from when the Walkman was invented and became commonplace.

Well played Sainsbury's! Popped out for cereal, local wee store was shut so had to go to the big one who sell records. Royal Blood,
Pink Floyd, Guns n Roses and a box of Coco Pops please.

CD Walkman maybe. I used to listen to whole albums when it was just tapes. And to be fair, I did even when I first got into CDs. But then the rot started... Doesn't help that the missus and I have slightly different tastes (I'd stick on a Crowded House album, she might want a Fifth Harmony song). I think our time just feels so more "important" now that we can't spend it "learning" a song/album. If it doesn't grab us on first listen, it's skipped. I remember playing Counting Crows Bouncing Off the Satellites back in the day and not liking it the first play; on the second/ third play I loved it. These days it probably wouldn't get that second play

Apparently most pop songs barely have an intro these days for fear of people skipping past them. If you don't have an immediate hook, you lose folks.
