Either Rooney is **** and finished or he isn't. You can't have it both ways.

Rooney is shot. We wouldn't have been any better with him in the team yesterday.

The central defence is the problem area now. Smalling isn't good enough. Blind, love him but he's not the answer. Blind could do Carricks job in midfield until TFM is ready. Or buy someone now, but I'd rather have a bonucci at the back. Hell, I'd take van dijk as he's an upgrade on Smalling.

No point in a new striker - not while Ibra is here. Rotate Ibra and Rashford. Let Rashford concentrate on that position and either play Miki on the right, or go back in time and buy Mane like we should have.

Then next season either Rashford up front, or buy a top striker to place both Rooney and Ibra.

First of all, congrats to Chelsea - much better team yesterday (obviously) and worthy of the win, and the scoreline. Luiz should've gone of course, but it wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

Predictably the negative approach hasn't worked too well. To me it feels like there has been a shift back from the negative tactics of the early part of the century to the more focused positive attacking football of Barcelona, Dortmund, Real and Bayern have pushed in last five or six years, which as a viewer of the game is positive for obvious reasons, but as a United fan we find ourselves at the wrong end of things. We couldn't cope with pressing even under Sir Alex, but since then we have appointed a succession of negative managers in Moyes and LVG, before now being with one of the strongest proponent of the negative style of play at the top table. We're looking very out-of-date in the league right now, let alone in European terms.

Also the last couple of years has seen the rise of the team rather than the individual I think - sides like Liverpool now are challenging for the title with a pretty average squad because the work together is greater than the sum of their parts. Spurs has a better squad, but again it's the total package of the team that lifts them to the level they are at now. The same was true at the Euros, with teams like Northern Ireland, Wales, Iceland and even Italy far exceeding expectations because of how they work together, whilst more talented individual squads like Spain and England ("talented" is debatable there, I know) under-perform so dramatically.

And of course top of the list of sides where the collective exceeds the sum of individual parts is Leicester. United right now feels more like England in the sense of having the individuals, but not the team. And without that, then even removing under-performing individuals like Rooney will only do so much.

Well tonight will be interesting. We really shouldn't be bothered what the result is for a League Cup match, but given the result on the weekend, we should expect a full strength team.

What is different from the Fergie era is that I see very little on the bench that can change games - not getting enough out of the squad. Martial, Memphis, Mata, Roonry, Schneiderlin, Miki should be chomping at the bit, trying to make an impact. I suppose we were spoilt with Hernandez, OGS etc.

OGS, yes, but Hernandez was just a poor man's Mark Robins

In an effort to avoid the doom and gloom I think one positive from recent performances has been Jose's use of Herrera. He looks at least like he wants to be responsible and is not shirking the ball when the game is against us.

Martial and Depay are not thriving in their use from the bench. I do wonder whether they both have personal problems off the field holding them both back. Jose's Manchester life is also not what he thought it would be with his family still down in London. If he is down then that will certainly not help.

We need to get a happy bunch of players off the field before they can perform on it. You can tell certain relationships in the squad work - Lingard, Pogba and Rahsford for example. In other areas I see too much tension between players for them to operate effectively. Blind and Smalling - both doing their best to 'take the lead' but neither doing it effectively.

Tonight should be interesting - that's why I'm going out to play five a side......

I don't believe the Hernandez is the second coming of Christ - but he was a threat from the bench. A player never good enough to be a first teamer, but who can do something different when needed. We don't have that type of player at the moment.

Glad I played five a side. Won 10 v 6 and got in to see the goal and a solid defensive second half performance.

United deserved winners. Definitely the better team tonight. I don't know what's happened to our attacking fluency in the last few matches, we look slow and ponderous in the build up and no shots on target is very poor.

Enjoyed that. That's how football used to be played, night matches are so much better.

Yeah solid, if not specatular against a city squad team (only 2 youngsters).

Thr mystery over Miki and Martial goes on, but add them in and it could be an exciting team.

Loving Herrera at the moment, he is reminding me of Keane, and he's improved so much, hoping he can keep it up. Zlatan still a concern, as he's missing lots of chances, but we can't expect too much from a 35 year old striker can we?

That City side was no weaker than a United side with Rojo at CB

Who actually played pretty well. But I have to hide behind the sofa whenever he's near the ball, most likely a one off.

To be honest I think the difference yesterday was our players had to go out and win... because, lets be honest, most of them haven't turned up since the first week or two of the season and pressure was only going to grow on them and Jose if we didn't.

It seems Pep told his players not to be too bothered about the cup as CL/EPL/FA Cup is more important. He seemed more than happy in the post match interview... if you'd seen that before seeing the result you'd have throught they won!

Any ways. It's one step forward and two back for us and has been for years, so expect a draw or loss to Burnley on Saturday :/
