I think they need to clarify the laws. Just because there is contact doesnt mean you should be able to go down, not in my opinion anyway, but more people seem to accept that now. Or is it now a non contact sport? In which case how can players wrestle each other in the box like they do? You should go down if youre fouled and cant stay up in my opinion, but then i know those days are long gone...!

On Benteke's, the way i look at it is if it had been at the other end and awarded I'd have been really ****** off with the pen being awarded.

Exactly.

Sky, BBC and MoTD ALL unanimously agreed (in some cases after seeing the replay clearly showing Benteke being clipped/tripped) it WAS a penalty on Sunday; the only people saying it wasn't are Palace and Talk****e Though Collymore was insisting all night (last night) that he had never dived in his life and that his opinion was more valid than Henry's and Carragher's.

Pardew didn't help his cause when he claimed it wasn't a penalty because, amongst other things, it occurred in the 94th minute and there were no other LFC players in the area. He also mentioned that if it had been the other way round it wouldn't have been given; that's possibly true but what is definitely true is that if Palace were a 'big' club then he would be looking at a disrepute charge right now.

That's the striker's union talk. I'd be surprised if Carragher shared that view.

Lawrenson said exactly the same thing.

From BBC article:

Why Liverpool's penalty was the correct decision

It was not a soft penalty that Palace conceded in the 94th minute, it was a daft one.

Damien Delaney did not have to tackle Christian Benteke, because he was only going one way and he was running towards the bye-line, not the goal.

All Delaney has to do is hold him up, but instead he goes to make the tackle.

It doesn't matter that he tried to pull out because if a striker feels anyone touch him at all inside the area, then he is going over.

I was watching it in the Match of the Day 2 production office and at first we all shouted that it was never a penalty but the linesman made the call and it turned out he got it right.

There are suggestions video assistance could be brought in to help officials soon and in this case it would have confirmed it was a penalty, because replays from a certain angle helped show there was contact between Delaney's knee and Benteke's foot.

There is a minimum amount of contact and only Benteke knows whether it was enough to bring him down but, once you have got contact, in a situation like this one where the forward is running in the area, then it is a penalty.

If he'd have done the flick the leg out to initiate contact, then I'd have understood the furore. They're the worst ones when the striker initiates contact and gets a pen.

Exactly.

And at least Young only flicks his leg out to try and make contact, IIRC the Vardy 'penalty' against Arsenal he actually altered the path of his run away from the ball to make contact with the defender.

Would Benteke have gone down anywhere else on the pitch? It's surely not the spirit of the law to say contact = impediment. Otherwise change the law to say there can be no contact in the box (including upper body) because any kind of touch can arguably affect the opponent's ability to maintain their run, control the ball or whatever.

That feeling in the pit of your stomach...

Yeah I have it too. Really want to win this one!

There is no excuse either, as we have far stronger squad this time around. But then Arsenal probably said the same.

Man we should be 4-0 up!! 3 superb saves.
We're going to regret not burying at least 1 more of those I fear.

Great perfomrance and well deserved win. Scrappy at times though, especially after watching Dortmund cruising before! Thankfully United's one shot on target wasnt enough for them tonight. Suprised at how poor they were, can understand why their fans are fed up.

I'm just going to put it out there......does anyone else think Firmino kind of looks like a lesbian?!

He was awful wasn't he? Very pro-United all game and was desperate for the 2nd goal to be offside when it clearly wasn't. [ EDIT: forget I said that having seen the replay ]

No surprise that Fellaini manages to escape another red card ( if not for the elbow at the end, how did not get a 2nd yellow for the same tackle that Henderson got booked for after 3 minutes ? )

Great performance... De Gea, always motm against us.

Klopp's taking off Sturridge was a good response, as Allen in midfield gave us back the control. Him winning headers against Fellani and Schweinstiger was hilarious.

Their only out ball being to lump it up to Fellani is frustrating to deal with, but hopefully he'll catch a ban for that elbow.

cracking performance and a great atmosphere tonight, needed another goal though given our superiority in most areas of the pitch.United were terrible but will improve next week ,the tie is far from over.
