Is this the first year that The Daily Show hasn't been nominated?

Yes. And thanks T4V for that interview. It was interesting that he commits himself fully to the point that he's a comedian rather than a blend of comedian/newsman.

John Stewart also always took that angle so as to absolve himself of any responsibility of the implications on the way they inform the public.

Yes, he is primarily a comedian, but the purpose of his show is to inform in an amusing way and that has some responsibility that I hope, but think, he takes seriously. I think he just doesn't want to get into any kind of detailed disussion about that, especially after sitting through four hours of the Emmys!

I'd much prefer a comedian who does journalism, but doesn't wish to attribute what they are doing as journalism... so there's no risk of potentially undermining 'proper journalism'... than ANY News organisation using the term, when all they do is employ stooges to read a teleprompted script which has been through a filter that caters to corporate interests before all else.

.... hmm long sentence. Think it's okay though!

Better a comedian that does journalism, than a journalist that tries comedy....

If you like John Oliver then a heads up that Sky Atlantic now airs Real Time With Bill Maher. Just watching the first episode and I'm really impressed.

Here's a clip from the episode as a flavour :-

Real Time is great. The full show has also been available as a podcast for years (along with the Overtime segment).

thanks for that info! I'll record it. I see that JO is back this week, for some reason my sky+ doesn't like the long breaks and never picks it up again when it restarts

This week's slot on Clinton and Trump was Brilliant.

Jon Stewart should still be around as well for this time and then gone after Trump looses..

Not really, people seem to think JS could do a better job, but in reality whilst Trump is generally a ridiculous figure worthy of mockery, they've been mocking him for about 18 months. He's just as bad as he was, if anything he's less mockable as he's toned it down a little.

But in reality, he says stupid and ignorant stuff, and his supporters at his rallies have a contingent of stupid and ignorant people. You can interview them and show Trump soundbites and all laugh, but he isn't really giving anyone anything new to work with.

However whatever he says is stupid enough they feel they need to report on it, when in reality the best stuff the daily show did was never "here is what he said stupid today," it was the less important stories that were funny.

Loved this week's JO - excellent on Clinton & Trump, particularly as I've never really known the full detail about Clinton and the emails (and what the fuss was).

Yes excellent summary, never really understood the Benghazi thing until then, all I ever see is internet memes calling her a murderer. That being said, she isn't whiter than white is she, and it prevents her presenting a holier than thou image.

Easily surpasses the Daily Show for me, just wish it was on a bit more often

As I said after the first couple of eps, they could stretch it out to 45 mins easily

I know, it just seems to be off air more than it's on, especially in the run up to the election when you could do with it! It does need to be on longer, the long segment at the end often seems rushed, they could have done an extra 15 mins on the scandals
