Well I'm out, I was waiting for these to upgrade my almost 3 year old 970 (which is still fine for most of what I play) but I think I'll just try and pick up a 1080 or 1080 ti cheap (assuming the prices for the ti drop a fair bit).

No way am I paying those prices for any of these new cards, especially as the only game I'll probably need a new card for is the new Assetto Corsa game coming in September.

Well I was thinking my 1070 was good enough, but if the 2070 does come in at £400 I may be tempted.

*Edit* Ok, so it seems the RRP is $499, so I'd expect them to be priced at £600 here. Think I'll wait.

At the moment I think the pound is only something like 85p per dollar, not great so we're going to get screwed over worse than ever.

It should be £389 (the pound is 1.28281 dollars), but I'd expect the traditional $1 = £1 to apply, then 20% VAT on top.

I swear I read it was worse than that but you're right, not as bad as I thought.

I have a 970 and will probably get a 2080, but I'll wait for reviews first.

What do you play? I find my 970 still pretty good if you only want to play at 1080p. I did want to upgrade but I think Nvidia have lost it with their pricing, they're going down the Apple route by not really much new but increasing their prices.

I think we're in exactly the opposite of your summary there. The 10 series is so fast there's very few people (perhaps only 4kers) who would have considered replacing the card purely for performance. I know I wouldn't have done.
So new features is exactly what they've added. Real time ray tracing is the holy grail of gaming visuals that we've been wanting for years.

And expensive they may be... but we're paying it (or at least the bit coin miners are!). Demand for the 10 series has been such that it never saw a price drop in the 2 years since it's release (until now)

Note: I'm certainly not going to preorder one. But I've gone from not even considering an nvidia 11 to very interested in how this turns out.

I made the mistake recently of getting a secondhand PC making sure the processor was fast enough, it was quad core 3.73 sounded pretty good, after buying it and doing 3D Mark found out it was naff, seems the architecture was different on the P4 extreme, sounds like a failed experiment. I naively bought it thinking it sounded good.

I play at 1440p. Final Fantasy 15 and PUBG I had to lower the settings.

You just bought a PC with a CPU from 2003? Wow. I hope you didn't pay much for it.

2080 Ti 38 FPS 1080P in Shadow of the Tomb Raider with Ray Tracing on does not sound very playable. https://www.digitaltrends.com/comput...ance-concerns/

I'm gonna go out on the limb given there are no benchmark numbers out there and say wait for the next cards after this from Nvidia or AMD for that matter as I don't think the performance gains are gonna be there over Pascal based on all the speculation out there.

38fps is infinitely playable. It's amazing how things change, old games were lucky if they were even 30fps!

Sounds like your running into the memory limits of the 970.

As DF always says, better locked at 30FPS with proper frame pacing than 38FPS without

I think you're probably right. The 10 series was sort of the pinnacle of the 'last gen' cards. Nothing is threatening them performance wise at DX11 - certainly at 1080/1440.

The first gen of an entirely new generation card is probably going to be a tad lacking in comparison.

38fps on a third person game is probably going to be fine but it's not what a 10 series gamer is going to have become accustomed to it'd suck on a driving game or something.

I'm hearing a LOT of very suspicious noises about the new cards.
The fact Nvidia apparently said nothing about performance/frame rates of the old cards vs the new cards, does seem to have many people's "Spidey Senses" tingling.

It's kinda feeling like (wild guessing) there is going to be minimal speed bumps for current games, but of course if a new future game DID use the new Ray stuff, then the new card would be able to hold onto the frame rates better.

I've not seen them all, or even many examples, but if I'm totally honest, I've not been struck with a WOW what a difference, when they showed some RTX On/Off examples.

In fact had I not seen the thing telling me I'd never had known.

Lot of money for a arguably dubious upgrade.
One youtuber basically saying, skip this, and wait for the next cards which will be when all this is actually worth while.

As far as I have seen its no big improvement on the 10 series but its got ray Tracing (YEY) but when turned on it tanks frame rates, its not doing much more than Pascal did unless you want ray tracing (YEY) I think I will pass. Do I want ray tracing well yes, do I want to pay $1000+ for it, no ... Do I want to play at high frame rates, hell yes, so I think I will stick with what I got. Besides ray tracing looks lovely, I'm too busy trying not to get shot in FPS rather than look at a nice fireball in the side of an enemys eyeball which looks lovely :P
