Which VPN?

I had the 'free' OkayFreedom 1yr offer that was posted here, but they've started injecting ads which I'm not going to put up with...

Saw an offer for PureVPN, but reddit seems to have some warnings against them...

SO... where to go?

I don't want to spend a fortune, but am prepared to pay for lifetime access if it's cheaper.
Main uses are for torrenting and accessing non-local sites, so needs to be good at that and have a few different countries available.

Thoughts?

I've tried a few and the one with the least annoyances I'd say is PIA. The software runs quietly in the background and automatically connects at boot without you needing to do anything, also it's fast enough to saturate my 150mbit connection (most of the time).

It's got its downsides though and the couple that spring to mind right now are that you need to bypass it to access these forums or any other site hosted on Vidahost and sometimes you'll connect to a server that Cloudflare hosted sites require you to click "I'm not a robot" before they let you in.

Yeah PIA came up a bit in my research. Looks like I can pay for just a month too so might give it a try...

Out of interest what were the others you've tried, and what put you off about them?

Thanks

The paid ones I tried were PureVPN, AirVPN and another one I can't recall. I think the issues I had were mostly software but I can't remember which which was which now. Sorry, that's not much help

Another I've heard good things about is NordVPN but I haven't tried it.

Took the plunge with PureVPN since I could get lifetime for the price of a year, and was told over on another thread that it's pretty good.

So far, i'm happy - speeds are what I'd want and the options seem good...

This annual survey of VPN services focused on logging and privacy might be worth a look;

I made a mental note to reply to this topic ASAP but I forgot it.

Incase you are still searching for a VPN, you should use a comparison site like http://comparisonvpn.com or just google one. What ever you choose, don't choose a free one.

If something is free, you are the product.

Let me know if you got any questions. I'll try to answer with more haste this time lol...

Any new thoughts or updates on VPNs?
Decided I need one when travelling to the US and using wi-fi.
So needs to be on windows and iPhone, and very easy to use!

A bit of browsing and reading reviews is pointing me towards NordVPN.

So on pricing, they're similar... Nord a bit cheaper, unless prepared for the 2 year Pure deal...

6 months:
PureVPN: $54
IPVanish: $54
NordVPN: $42

12 months:
PureVPN: $71 for 24 months
IPVanish:$78
NordVPN: $69

IPVanish is based in the US, which may be a problem if some Trump's plans for data laws come to fruition. Whereas Nord is based in Panama, and Pure in Hong Kong.
One review casts doubts on Pure's privacy.

I'm with PureVPN and that review is tosh. I've been with them 2 years+ now on a lifetime plan and the things they point out are just rubbish...

They criticize fake user photos from cs reps - who doesnt do that? I've had great CS from them

I'm 99% certain my user data hasn't been sold as I use personalised e-mails for everything and i have had no spam to that address...

Speeds are GREAT. In fact - i sometimes get better speeds on my VPN than I do without it on Speedtest.net. I have no idea how that works and it's probably some fake thing, but i've never had any speed issues except on the 2 occasions that one server went down - their customer services instantly gave me an alternate to use.

IP and DNS leaks... these are common place with many providers and windows, but if you do a quick google you can prevent this 100% with minimal tinkering.

The guy writing that guide is using their software too - screw that - use Windows built in VPN stuff and it's much more stable

Honestly, if i didn't know better and had time to research, i recon that review is written by a competitor - it just doesnt tie with my reality of using it

Boink uses PureVPN, so perhaps was reacting to my post linking to a negative review.
But from what vaderag says, it's perhaps not as unbiased at it claims to be.

Seems to be difficult to sort between the many reviews of VPNs online, and come up with an unbiased, fair, but authoritative review.

Just signed up for PIA (there's a lifetime 50% off voucher around).

I'm new to all this, so found Do I Leak very useful for testing.

Yep, definitely take a look at that and associated guides. As mentioned above in the middle of my rant, there are some things Windows itself does that can show you

Do you have a link for the voucher?
