Premium Bonds Questions and Answers / Winners and Losers (Part 2)

Would be good to see what the maths behind is but I guess they envisage more take up so the odds will be diluted further...

Anyone on here actually think they have a chance of winning 1 million? Id put money in PM's now after using all interest earning means and I had 15k in for 10 years.

The million isn't a consideration - the chance of getting that is so ridiculously small that it's not a factor for me. However the other returns are more interesting - get one of them and you should be comfortably ahead of other savings options (that said I've never won higher than £100 but still ).

I think a lot of people use bonds after maxing their other savings options, in addition to the obvious suspense of how much you'll win every month. The return has been enough to keep me interested, though obviously rock-bottom interest rates nationally set the bar pretty low anyway.

But now that the ISA allowances are changing then I might need to cut into my bonds to fill the new allowance, as that's obviously £10,000 extra I hadn't expected to need to find. ISA rates are very low now themselves of course, but obviously I'd rather use as much of the allowance as I can in the expectation that things will improve for ISAs in the future.

With the new ISA allowance and Santandar 123 account then PM's will be the place to put funds after all interest paying ways if you aren't interested in the million
The more you have invested the more you are wanting a return.20k in a S123 account pays after tax approx £40 so with that in PM's you need to win £50 most months or have a few hundreds which isnt guaranteed but at least your money is Safe as its with the Government

With the New ISA Limit of 15k,who here who has that amount in PM's will keep it in PM's instead of an interest paying ISA if you havent got enough for both?

I suspect I'll need to cut into the bonds to meet the ISA increase - I had budgeted for the existing allowance so it wouldn't be the full £15k, and I should have a few grand more that can go into the ISAs, but a decent chunk of it will have to come from the bonds.

Timing might be interesting though - with ISA deals not being great at the minute I might leave filling the allowance entirely until quite late in favour of the bonds. But regardless, I will fill the new allowance before the subsequent financial year starts.
