Seven Pounds [Will Smith] 2008

Just been to see this at the Cinema. I'm not a huge Hollywood fan, and tend to like gritty dramas, low budget independents and non-English language films.

I'm a little surprised that it's getting a pretty good slating, including this:

Which might just be one of the most mind-blowingly-bad-piece-of-journalistic-rubbish that I've read in a long while.

I understand that the basic plot is a little cliched, however the way the story is told, the performances and the un-hollywood-like style, all made, for me, a pretty good movie, although the big screen didn't add much, you can certainly wait for the DVD/BD.

Is this in previews then? Saw the trailer for this and it looked pretty interesting, though looks like it's out mid-January in the cinema, might catch it then.

Indeed - came out yesterday in the US. Cinema was probably three quarters full, which is about the most full I've seen a cinema over here.

He's certainly turned into a fine actor - who would have thought it of the boy playing fresh price?

It's a bit "Pay it forward" worthy but I certainly didn't think it was a terrible film.
I only briefly scanned the plot before viewing the film so was intrigued as to who Smith's character was and his motivation.
Mind you I twigged fairly early on where the story was going but still enjoyed the ride.
There's one highly serious scene towards the end of the film that will probably have a few people laughing, I almost did.
Look out for a great bit of minor Dad dancing in the background of the final scene too!
Girls of the forum make sure you've got a box of tissues with you when viewing as you may need them.

Just out of interest - did you figure that out from trailers, or did you just read it somewhere? Here in the US, the only trailers I've seen have been ultra vague and your synopsis is a bit too detailed.

Oh and

not usually a will smith fan but enjoyed this a whole lot. his quiet torment really came across well, and whilst there were few surprises it kept me engaged throughout.

the new york times reviewer must have seen a very early edit of this as his review is entirely wrong.

I don't want to read any of the spoilers, but is nobody else wondering how they made WS look so young? I haven't seen the movie, but he looks 20 years old in all the publicity pix.
