He says "i'm off" as Rick is ushered into the RV to talk with Jim, and once that conversation between Rick and Jim is over it cuts to everyone (Shane included) discussing what to do next outside the RV. The section with the CDC guy isn't until after they're already back on the road.
Yeah, that bugged me, too. Since the last thing Dale said was "I'm out of duct tape," I guessed Shane picked some up at the station he saw and hurried back to the RV.

Not the first time continuity has seemed skewed in this series, though.

Quick question, only watched the first episode this evening but the wife was really upset when the horse got eaten. Are there any other animals meeting a sticky end in the rest of the episodes?

Yes, but not as 'sticky' as the horse

She does realise this isn't a documentary, right?

My OH was the same though. Didn't bat an eyelid at the girl getting shot, but the horse brought her close to tears. What is it with women and horses?

I understand that horse riding can be quite a stimulating experience for a woman.

Yes, there is a scene where a rat gets eaten. Made me sad

Whatever, I'm not particularly fussed about the ending of Shawshank. But if you'd like to know the argument against.... The end of the film is about hope and Red wishing that Andy made it. When Red finds the letter, that's the pay off, Andy did make it and Red can join him. That's where it probably should end. The tacked on bit explicitly shows Andy's personal "Shangri-La", thus cheapens the dream and the viewer doesn't put their own version of it in. As Andy says, the Pacific forgets, so really he should be forgotten, as he wished.

Also, showing the beach scene closes off the "did he really make it?" question and destroys the death/heaven metaphor which was built up.

Did we see Valinor (the land of the Elves) in LOTR?

I was really angling at "The Mist" when I was referring to Darabont completely ******* up an ending. That film was almost completely ruined by it.

That film was made by that ending!! Up til then it's a cheap, badly acted, straight to video story of everyday nutjobs and tentacle monsters.

Agreed. Even Stephen King said he preferred the film ending!

Never mind The Mist, I can't believe people are dissing Shawshank's ending. Morgan Freeman's massive grin is so sincere, and the music just right. The fact that they don't even exchange any words but at the same time say so much is amazing (i'm getting goose bumps as I type).

That final pullaway and the dedication as we fade to black reduces me to tears every time.

The ending of Shawshank is why so many people think it's the best film ever. Take that away and it wouldn't make those people's top 100.

The ending of Shawshank is a great example of taking a thematically sound and resonant ending and making it as obvious and populist as possible. I'm probably going to sound like a snob here but it's the kind of ending that people who think reading into the subtext, themes, and characterisation of a film is all a bit sad and "geeky", because Red travelling on that bus thinking that he hopes he'll meet Andy again perfectly concludes his journey. He now has hope, THATS the real end point of his story, not the reunion.

Personally I don't think it adds or detracts from the film beyond removing any trace of ambiguity from the finish, but I can appreciate the emotional uplift of seeing these two characters who you grow to love back on screen together one last time. Would the film have been so massively popular without the happy end? Maybe not. Does it actually make the film any better? Not one jot imo!

If it hadnt been so popular would we now be discussing it?

Absolutely not! We only talk about massive mainstream hits on these boards! What do you think this place is, a forum for film buffs?

I actually think that the movie would have been just as popular if we'd have faded to black on the coach, but after what's happened to the characters the audience deserves the payoff.

The fact is that so many movies do endings like that and come across as corny and trite. Shawshank doesn't fall into that trap, which is lucky, because if they'd pitched it ever so slightly differently it could have weakened the movie considerably.
