With the release of his first solo album The Messenger, the former Smiths guitarist talks about finally embracing his old sound, David Cameron and why he and Morrissey don't talk any more

Thumbs up Who Would've Thought ...

Rare tape of early The Smiths rehearsals surfaces — hear 40-minute set from May 1983

Quote:
A newly revealed cassette recording of The Smiths rehearsing in a Manchester warehouse in May 1983 — prior to signing their first record deal — has surfaced online, collecting performances of nine songs with early arrangements and lyrics in what the band’s drummer today called “an early recording you’ve probably never heard before.”

In May 1983 (exact date unknown), while preparing to record their debut album, The band ran through & recorded a selection of songs at a rehearsal in band manager Joe Moss’ jeans warehouse (Crazy Face). The cassette tape was recorded for Troy Tate in order to give him something to work with before going into the studio. It’s pretty rough, but considering it was recorded on cassette with a stereo Mic pointing into the room, the quality isn’t too bad. Morrissey’s vocals are a bit distorted – maybe singing too close to the mic or maybe the cassette Mic was too close to the PA but everything else is surprisingly clear. There is some tape flutter at various points.

I was lent the master cassette by a source close to the band who made the recording, let’s call him Pablo Cuckoo, in 1997 with a view of trying to put it out as a semi-official release. As it was recorded before the band had signed to Rough Trade, technically he had the rights to the recording. But a combination of poor sound quality & threats from Warner Bros. meant that the idea was shelved.

This is great ! I could happily listen to a couple of hours down nostalgia lane with Marr ... but how amazing with Moz too !

As I've said elsewhere, this is interesting but the pro-shot DVD of 4th Feb 1983 Hacienda gig that surface last year was far more important, but that didn't get half the media coverage.

Seems he's been advised to retire due to his ill health.

Looks like he's 'retiring' from touring, no doubt we'll see him do one off shows at some point.

I thik that is probably the best way to go as he obviously has health issues.

Maybe he should have chowed down on a few juicy burgers.

Can Morrissey survive the years of refusal? - The Independent
Quote:
Morrissey 25: Live is finally a document of Morrissey as a star – in his fans' intelligent, consuming obsession with him, perhaps rock's last. Having been a fervent teenage admirer of the New York Dolls and Patti Smith, he has made himself a worthy object of such adoration.
Morrissey 25 : Live - official site
Quote:
Filmed live during Morrissey’s most intimate gig in decades at the Hollywood High School in Los Angeles on 2 March 2013, this is the first authorised Morrissey film for nine years and marks 25 years of the solo career of one of the world’s most iconic and enigmatic performers.

The film opens with fans talking about their unwavering devotion to the singer and the unique appeal of this unusual venue – a striking contrast to the sold out arena concert at the Staples Center on the previous night. Tickets to the concert in the 1,800-seater school auditorium were sold out in 12 seconds and this now legendary concert became Morrissey’s penultimate performance on the US Tour. Featuring many classic tracks from the artist’s prolific repertoire including Meat Is Murder, Everyday Is Like Sunday, Please, Please Please Let Me Get What I Want and The Boy With The Thorn In His Side, Morrissey 25: Live is an unmissable cinema event for fans worldwide.
This Charming Charlie - Charlie Brown comics with added Morrissey lyrics - in case you missed it from another thread (c/o NicolaUK) - works amazingly well !

Although Morrissey's Autobiography was set to be available throughout the UK on September 16th, a last-minute content disagreement between Penguin Books and Morrissey has caused the venture to collapse. No review copies were printed, and Morrissey is now in search of a new publisher.
No doubt he'll have publishers lined up waiting to step in but you do wonder what the problem was.

Cash? He seems to have got more stubborn over they years in this respect. He's been sitting on an album for what? 18 months? because he apparently can't find a label that meets his expectations (which you presume means they're not offering enough money.)

Think of the £££s he could make with a PledgeMusic deal or similar.

I don't think it's a cash thing, more likely something libellous.

Great - I didn't know his book was so close !

Let's hope the reason it was pulled was the full details about the (alleged) indecent proposal he received from David Bowie !

Don't suppose there's much chance of him self-publishing, so this could drag on ...
