The film is based on a book by the guy who wrote A Simple Plan (made into a movie by Sam Raimi). It's about a bunch of backpackers who get lost somewhere in South America and end up trapped on a hillock (quarantined by superstitious Indians), where some mysterious, malevolent force starts taking them out one by one.

The book is one of those pulpy, not-that-great novels that could easily make a decent movie (it has a fair bit of internal monologue, but most of it could be cut pretty painlessly). Which was quite possibly the point all along. Lots of room for CGI special effects sequences. It's hardly going to top Raimi's film, though.

I can imagine getting trapped on a mountain and I could possibly suspend belief long enough to except people getting on a hill.

But how the hell do you get trapped on a hillock?!

As long as there is some good gore in it.... then I am an easily pleased Yorkshireman

This film has some seriously nasty moments.

It's not really a scary movie. Just very nasty at parts. Well worth a watch, even for that one scene. Reminded me a bit of The Descent (crossed with Turistas.) Definitely got under my skin at times.

I felt it was missing a lot... some gruesome scenes too... but massive holes in the plot.
Wife liked it - i just thought it was 'ok'.

Nice and gory, and like all half-decent horror films

Nice blend of CGI and proper effects too.

It's in stock at some retailers, so you are right, probably work out as expensive as a night out at the cinema nowadays anyway.

To be honest Lou... I don't go that much to the cinema these days. Too many idiots spoiling it with chatter and messing on mobile phones.

The Ruins is not a blockbuster so films like that I tend to get on DVD. Its the likes of Indy/Hulk/Batman that the big screen was made for...well for me anyway

If I don't like Ruins then it just goes on the auction site and virtually get my money back on it

Not a bad movie and far better than The Happening. Blonde girl looked good in her white vest and underwear Shame there was no background to various aspects of the story unless or course that was intentional. Some quite nasty bits as well.

What was the white powder they were putting on the ground around the pyramid / temple?
