Rambo Boxset on Blu. Opinions?

Just finished this today before work. Pretty impressive. First Blood looked fantastic. Rambo 3 as well and Rambo was perfect as to be expected of a new film. Part 2 was gash though. ShaKy title screens and some very soft looking scenes. Sound was good to but im not really pushed about that side of bluray.

Watched it on a 32" Panny 1080p. Anyone watched it on a 47"or 50". Do the films look worse or do they hold up? What did other people think of it?

Best lines of the 4 films - "Who are you?" "Im your worst nightmare!!!!"

Is this the US Lionsgate release or the UK Optimum boxset?

I have all the US Rambo films individually and they are region free.

Great timing on this, Si -

I just watched the first 3 of these from my US boxset over the past few days too.

Love all of them, especially the first and second ones. Agree that they all looked fantastic in places (particularly First Blood) and were great transfers overall.

Fave lines? There are too many!

Near the end of Rambo 3 when Trautman and Rambo are faces with the Russian commander and all his military might, and Trautman says:

"Any bright ideas?"
"I guess surrounding them's out."
"Hell of a time to be joking, John."

The US set has lots of extras, but they are all from the DVDs I believe... so if you have all the old documentaries and commentaries...then not an issue

Ya, the uk version is pretty light on extras. Apart from the 4th film.

I've never properly got into Rambo, I was in the Arnie camp when I was younger (love Rocky though). Reading up on the films, I reckon I'll enjoy the first and last but not so much the middle two (get the impression that they're more for nostalgia heads) but still find this set tempting. It sounds like a great release for an entire film series, which seems quite rare in HD.

Yup, 2&3 are pretty dated. 3 especially. I imagine Sly looks back on that one now and groans. Its too ott as will. How the **** can anyone outrun a helicopter

It's quite interesting, because the first is more of a psychological film and a thriller isn't it? Those are the roles Sly should be playing, I never bought into him in the "tough guy" role that much.

I have all 4 Rambo films on region free US discs.

The latest film makes use of the Profile 2 feature by downloading a feature - can anyone explain what its supposed to do as I've done the download but cant see how to use the feature

Ive always wondered why Rambo FBpt2 looked crap on every format, vhs, tv, dvd. Was it the film stock used or some other processing because in some scenes it doesnt even look like film does it, like a smeary ntsc conversion.

It was heavily diffused by Jack Cardiff when he shot it, which is why it looks cheap and nasty. It really doesn't suit it, don't know why they made that choice. It looks great when people like Geoffrey Unsworth do it for something like Superman, but it looks crap in Rambo.

Not that I care that much. Maybe they were trying to make it look comic-booky or something.

Have all the cuts that were present before in the UK been waived?

I have the US boxset of Rambo 1,2 and 3 and that is uncut (all the horse falls etc)

Just wanted to know before I upgrade to the UK blu set.

Thanks in advance,

Dave.

Don't you mean downgrade? I thought the UK discs were missing some extras.

I'm assuming he is on about the R1 DVD set... but I could be wrong as I'm confused about this 'upgrade' shenanigans as well

I have the US DVDs of Rambo 1, 2 and 3 and want to upgrade to blu. I just wanted to know if all the cuts that were present in the UK were still there or if they have been waived for the UK blu set.

I know that the US blu set is region free but I was gonna try the UK set first if it's any good.

I'm not too bothered about extras features to be honest.
