New PS3 - disc inside it?!

Just wired up my PS3 and faced some initial confusion when I tried to feed in my first disc to the player. Wouldn't go in... then thought to hit the "eject" and there's a very odd looking disc in there- it is a "BD Adjustment Disc", clearly an official Sony thing as their logo is on there. It also says "For Japan Only".

Anyone know what this might be? Is it worth hanging on to? I'm loathe to putting it in the player in case it does all sorts of stuff to it. Fairly scratched so I'm guessing it actually belongs to a sloppy engineer...

After much meddling to try and fix what I now understand to be impossible - audio to the telly through HDMI AND surround through optical to a receiver - I'm disappointed that such a specced player doesn't let you do this whereas other machines do... ho hum. One day I'll have an HDMI capable amp but until then, I'll either have to meddle, or use the receiver whenever playing any disk. Ho hum.

It's part of the new "Build yourself a PS3" collection. New part each week for only £5.99. Issue one only £349.......

I had the same issue with optical out and HDMI out for sound... will the processor die if it does both?

I'm hoping that the engineer just forgot to hit eject once he/she was all done. I've played the latest Harry Potter disc and that was fine (pretty impressive, actually - qualitywise, not necessarily the teenage-angst-heavy storyline!) so all looks good.

Tried Googling the various details on the disc itself but nothing out there about the disc... a real mystery!

At work when we buy new kit (Computers) there always seems to be several CD-ROM drives where a Notebook driver CD has been left in them.

I think they just test the drives work because a notebook driver CD is pretty useless on a desktop PC!

Yet another underhand tactic by Sony to artificially boost BD sales
