XBOX 360 & Media Player 11 - streaming music

I've finally got my new XBOX 360 on my home network. I was planning on installing Windows Media Connect so I can listen to music on the xbox that is stored on my PC.

However, it appears that the Media Player 11 beta 2 has this functionality built in. I'm already running this but I cannot find any mention of how to set this up!! Can anybody help? Am I missing an obvious menu option?

cheers.

I'm sure you still need media connect installed. Install it anyway.

Right click on the title bar in WMP11 B2.

Select Tools>Options

Look for the Library tab.

At the top of the tab you will have a button for Configure Sharing...

Click that to launch the setup for the MS uPnP media server (aka Windows Media Connect in Windows Media Player).

Once your in there it should be fairly self explanatory, you may need to pair the 360 depending on your anonymous settings but it should work well enough once paired. Share my media to… must be ticked.

I have messed with this with a 360 and a Netgear MP101 media streamer. Seems to be a fairly decent uPnP media server and having it built into WMP11 seems to use SOOOO much less RAM then the Windows Media Connect memory hog .

Still not perhaps as good as TwonkyMusic or gMediaStreamer but it does what it says on the tin and shares your media .

EDIT: You DO NOT need Windows Media Player connect installed. Think of this as Media Player Connect 3 built into WMP. IIRC installing WMC2 stops the WMP11 stuff working.

It uninstalled Windows Media Connect on my PC when I installed Media Player 11. Seems to work better as well. With WMC2 I couldn't stream photos and only some of my music showed up. WMP11 works fine though.

Also, Windows Media Connect no longer runs as a separate application. So as soon you've started Windows, you are able to stream music without starting up Media Player .

Cheers DJWillis - got it sorted straight away. Just played some music fine on my xbox (I've not tried any photos yet). Can the xbox show album art?

The only issue I have with this, is letting WMP11 manage my media library. CUrrently my D: drive is all mp3's (artist folders on the root, with album sub folders underneath). There's 140gb on there and it will take a while for it index it. Also I don't want it to mess with the files as 90%+ have the correct ID3 tags etc and 75%+ have the correct album art.

Cheers guys, had no idea that this was built into WMP. Have got it up and running, can't say if it actually improves anything though.

For photos and music, yep, to use the 360 as a Media Center Extender (i.e. Videos, TV PVR etc.) nope, you will still need MCE running somewhere to host the 360.

Also, has anybody played with pointing the 360 at the Vista versions of MCE? Not sure I totally like the new GUI but it does seem a tad snappier on the 360 then the XP based MCE extender code.

Aargh..! The library in media player is a nightmare. Stuff that I thought was tagged fine (for use on my ipod) is actually all over the place according to media player. Looks like I'm going to have to carefull check the ID3 tags before adding them....
