I've been totally fuming all day - most of my thoughts are similar to the ones of disgruntled fans on MUTV This is going to come back and haunt us.

But the manager insisted he was still looking to bolster his side before the new season.

"We've added three players, two have gone out and we've lost Laurent Blanc. But we need two more players," said Ferguson.

"We need someone who can add to what we've got up front and we need a defender."

Giggs will be the #1 choice I'd imagine.

it's usually the wide players as they are thought to have a better range - due to their crossing - so i would say it'll prob be giggs but if fletcher is involved in the first team this season then i could see him getting the responsibility

I really cant see how Defoe is going to add that extra bit of magic. Someone like Rosiky would be great.

Kezman would be a better buy, with a "decent" amount of transfer funds available why not temp Milan with a £20M bid for Shevchenko... :norty:

Kezman is available for only £2 million which of course would be an amazing piece of business for any club. He's also effectively available on a free transfer in 5 months.

Veron sale was footballing decision, says Ferguson
Reuters
Wednesday August 6, 2003 7:56 PM

LONDON, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Juan Sebastian Veron's sale to big-spending Chelsea was a footballing decision, as well as a financial one, says Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.

"The overall package, in terms of what we are saving on his salary and what we are getting from Chelsea made it too interesting for us," Ferguson told United's MUTV channel.

"But I don't think we needed that (money). It's more to do with the number of midfielders we already have.

The premier league champions announced on Wednesday that they had agreed to sell the Argentine international to the west London club for 15 million pounds ($24 million).

The 28-year-old, who cost 28 million pounds when he joined United from Italian club Lazio in 2001, was set to tie up a contract and undergo a medical at Stamford Bridge.

Ferguson said last week he did not expect Veron to be sold following a successful pre-season tour of the United States.

But in Wednesday's interview with MUTV he said an abundance of talented midfielders at his disposal, coupled with Chelsea's offer, had prompted Veron's sale.

"If you look at the job that Phil Neville and Quinton Fortune did last year, plus you have the fact that Kleberson is going to be a very, very good player, Eric Djemba Djemba is a good player...and we have Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and young Darren Fletcher."

Brazilian midfielder Kleberson is currently waiting for a work permit but Ferguson does not expect any problems.

MASSIVE BUYER

Ferguson said he would have preferred not to have sold Veron to rivals Chelsea, who have embarked on a massive spending spree since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased the club.

"They were the only club to come in for him. If it had been an Italian club we would have preferred him to go there. But there's not that kind of money in the game in Italy," he said.

"There's one massive buyer and that's Chelsea. All the rest are trying to be sensible in a market which has had its fingers burnt quite severely.

"It's happening throughout Europe, not just in England. You have some English clubs, like Leeds United, who are on the brink...Chelsea were on the brink of financial disaster until the golden goose came along. There are problems out there.

"But United have always kept a good ship....very well balanced in terms of salaries, money paid out and money taken in. But we're always competitive in terms of winning things."

Ferguson praised Veron's contribution to the club, saying: "He was a marvellous player for us, always wanted the ball, very good skill. He did a good job for us."

With the money raised from Veron's sale, and that of England captain David Beckham to Real Madrid for up to 35 million euros, Ferguson will now turn his attention to strengthening his squad.

"We do need another two players. I've said this for a few weeks that we can add to what we've got up front and we do need a defender. It's something we are looking at."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Look at the way he raving about Kleberson being a Very, Very good Player then Djemba a Good Player

How good is Kleb then

i find it a bit strange that Fergie sold Veron because he had loads of midfielders, why id he not keep veron and not buy Kleberson or Eric D-D.

i thoughht Kleberson was quite a def mid, like Eric D-D, and Keane, and Butt.

You don't have to be an attacking midfielder to be a playmaker. Obvioulsly Fergie wants to play two central midfielders who are good defensively which Veron wasn't.

As I say, he's available to discuss a free transfer in less than 5 months.

As for Kleberson, yes he's primarily a defensive midfielder, but hey, this is a Brazilian we're talking about. He is extremely good on the ball and feels more than comfortable going forward. There aren't many defensive midfielders in the world with his skill and creativity. Kinda reminds me of Edgar David's in some respects. I think he's gonna be a big hit at Utd.

I'm somewhat unsure how I feel at the moment but my faith remains intact

I think AFs comments re the overall financial aspects of the game in Europe are probably the key. If Chelsea were struggling, Arsenal have little dosh, Leeds have well and truly mesed up then why couldn't that happen to MUFC. It's all well and good for us to say were the biggest club etc etc but we do not really know what the books look like or have inside football knowledge to predict what will happen in the next few years. I assume we have cleared our biggest earners (has to be one of the main reasons why Veron went) and that is what he is referring to in terms of wages. None of the new guys can demand / command big salaries initially that's for sure.

I was hoping for a Viera bid but having heard Fergie's interview on Sky yesterday am pretty sure we will end up with Defoe or similar and another defender only.

Looks like it's time for some new young blood so everyone calm down and be patient for a couple of years. We will continue or return victorious in the long run.

Be patient and wait a few years while Real Madrid add more and more CL trophies to their already impressive collection?

Did I say that?

Lets admit it, Real Madrid are the most likely team to win CL and their entire squad strengh as a whole is streets ahead of every other team, their record of european victories ****** all over every other top european team (not you scousers ), even the likes of Lippi and Hitzfeld has managed to progress to more than just one single CL final that Sir Alex has managed, with Ottmar winning the CL twice with two different German clubs on a fraction of Uniteds budget.

unrealnils, you know fine well that AC Milan won it because of Berlusconi's deadly mafia link.
