My immediate reaction is

but to be honest i think its a bad move for fans of English football and the Premier League, Beckham is the sort of player that makes the Premier Legue so competitive and respected worldwide. We shouldn't be losing him to teams that are ultimately Man United biggest rivals (on a European Stage)

think Ferguson may well have stayed there too long.

I just hope he still performs for England

I for one believe Beckham/SFX have been negotiating with Madrid on the sly and thats why the club tried to use the Barca bid to up the fee. Still, thats the way football works these days & I think £25m is a fair price for him.
I echo those thoughts. David was an integral part of Manchester United over the past 8 years, but sadly his private life led to his downfall.

On a side note, reports have claimed that he has been in talks with Real Madrid since May 12. I would like to see a full apology from all the papers that have slagging off Manchester United for the past 10 days.

€1.25m each time they reach the quarter finals.
Well maybe it's not that bad, just seems like alot of conditions/installments/arsing about.
What's wrong with it? United are pretty much guaranteed €30m as Madrid will qualify for the CL and the chances are that they'll reach the quarters so it's likely United will get the full €35m over 4 years. Most transfers involve installments nowadays and it will be seen far more in English football now that the FA have ruled that fees can be paid over the length of the contract. Even United are paying for Ferdinand in installments.

I said a couple of weeks ago, that we weren't going to get what we wanted for him. I suggested 23 million or so, and that may well be what we get.

It has to be said, fergie must have been really desperate to get rid of him, to accept £5million up front.

Now, about laporte; Utd must have known that david had been talking to real for weeks, behind their backs (poor david, didn't Utd just stab him in the back  ), and I'm sure laporte knew too.

Now it may have been an attempt to get the fee upped, but I can't help wondering if there's something else in the offing. Maybe Kluivert at a knock down price, or something going on.

It's all been what we've come to expect from beckham - a theatrical mess.

Good luck to the lad - think he was worth more though.

What does happen though if Real ship him off to Italy in 2 years?

Nothing, AFAIK the deal would still stand. If Madrid qulaified for the CL 1/4's for the following 2 years then they'd owe United €5m.

Yes and no - pretty much all big transfers only have a relatively small initial payment. And I'm pretty sure all the conditions will be fulfilled, so United will eventually get full payment.

I don't see how - Beckham said from day one that he wasn't interested in Barca. Manchester United did the deal, Beckham had nothing to do with it. It's the club that will be perceived to have acted dishonorably, not the player.

That said, it's clear that Barca's president used Beckham to get elected. And it worked.

I would have expected between 8 and 10 million for the first payment, especially as he's going "cheaply" compared to the prices people had hoped for.

Now the more important part, who is fergie going to bring in

I would think that United will get three top-drawer players. Who are they gonna be?

There's a long way to go with this story yet. The media storm once he has moved to Spain will make the current coverage seem miniscule in comparison. Every aspect of his life will be scrutinised, along with match performances etc. The real winners will be Real Madrid - the exposure they will receive the world over is priceless free advertising. They got an incredible bargain.

Well I reckon they must have a free run at ronaldinho (surely even real don't need him now).

As for others

I would like to see Alonso, Ronaldhino, Thuram, a striker and a goalkeeper. This may sound a lot, but there may be one or two more departures, and Fergie has certainly got the ammo now.

Maybe Real have said they won't follow up their interest in both Ronaldinho and Baraja hence the price being a bit lower.

Madrid have already tied up Alonso IIRC. They will sign him in the summer but loan him back to Sociedad for a year.
