The history of America in films?

Weird request here, but I wonder if anybody is up to the challenge.

I was wanting to learn/understand a bit more about the founding of the Americas, and instead of reading books on it I wondered if enough films have been made to watch in a chronological order that would tell the story.

I expect you could start with something like 1492: Conquest of Paradise and things like The Patriot and Gangs of New York would fit in somewhere as well as some Westerns.

Think it's possible?
