Spotify works well on Alexa of most of your stuff is on that, and Spotify is generally way best than Amazon music.

Yes, I could play anything I'd uploaded. I had some obscure stuff, plus some audiobooks and stuff, although I could live without those.

I've never tried Spotify - might give it a go. Are the ads in the free version obtrusive?

In case you're thinking of swapping I recently bought a couple of google devices and they play music from my uploaded songs without having to pay the monthly fee.

Answered my own question: you need a premium account for Alexa. Sort of defeats the object, as it's more expensive than Unlimited.

Or if you can find five family members or friends who want to share a family accounts it works out at Ł2.50 a month each, you just need one person to be the account holder and let them set up a standing order to your account.

If you've got a NAS drive that can install Plex, Alexa can play music from that. And that's completely free.

How well does ALexa work with Plex? Does it pick up more obscure stuff in your collection ok? Can it pick up your own (ie user created) playlists?

I'd forgotten Plex works with Alexa now, might be useful.

I wonder if the Amazon files will be deleted. Just seen this from here:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/cus...deId=201379330

Quote:
To play or download your previously uploaded songs after your subscription expires, go to Your Amazon Music Settings and select “Keep my songs.” This needs to be done before your subscription expires.
After your subscription expires:
There is no option to restart your subscription.
Additional music can’t be uploaded.
All Amazon music purchases remain securely stored for free.
The interesting bit here is that I ticked "Keep My Songs", which originally said something about only keeping them for a short time...but now there doesn't seem to be any time limit applied on that help page...

EDIT, Amazon chat help says they will remain..

Quote:
Me: Hello! I had an Amazon Music subscription with the 250,000 song storage plan. I received an email last year stating Amazon were ceasing the plan. I ticked "Keep my music" as per this page https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custom...(See full link) . Can you confirm my music that I have already uploaded will not be deleted? Or will it eventually be deleted? I understand I cannot upload any further music.
You're now connected to Praveen from Amazon.co.uk
Praveen: Hello, my name is Praveen. I'll be happy to help you.
Me: Hi Praveen, thank you.
Praveen: I can understand that you wish to know whether your uploaded music are deleted or not.
You are welcome.
Me: That is correct. The plan no longer exists, but I was checking to make sure the existing uploaded files are safe.
Praveen: I have checked and see that none of your songs are deleted. You can access your uploaded tracks.
Me: Thanks, will they always be available?
Praveen: You are welcome.
Yes. It will be available.
Me: The reason i am asking is that the original email said that once my plan had finished, the songs will be reduced to only 250songs. But the help page here says they will always be available: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custom...(See full link)
Praveen: No issues.
It will be available.
Me: That's fantastic, thank you for confirming that. Was this a policy change with Amazon? Or a mistake in the original email?
Praveen: Policy will not change.
Me: Sorry I meant, was this a policy change from when the emails were sent out? My email said the following: "Your Amazon Music storage subscription is set to expire on*3 Sept. 2018. Please be advised Amazon is retiring Amazon Music storage and is no longer offering new subscriptions. Please download your music before your subscription ends. You will not be able to upload music, and all songs that exceed the 250 song limit will be removed. The remaining 250 songs will be removed in 1 year after your subscription expires. These storage changes only affect music you’ve imported. Music you’ve purchased from Amazon (MP3s or AutoRip from CDs) will remain securely stored for playback and download."
Praveen: You have ticked keep my songs on your account. So you uploaded tracks will be available for you.
Me: That's great thank you for confirming!
Have a great day
Praveen: You’re welcome.
It's my pleasure to assist you.
Is there anything else I can help you with at the moment?
Me: No that's great, thanks for you help!
Praveen: Have a great day!

I've only tried individual songs, but it found them ok. It found Dominic the Donkey at Christmas ok

That directly contradicts what the email I received says:

What are people currently recommending as the best music streaming service at the minute?

I’ve looked at Google Play music and read a few articles hinting it might close soon when it gets integrated into YouTube Music.
I have Amazon Prime but I’m struggling with the Amazon Music app and trying to work out how which music is Prime only and which is full Amazon Music?
I use an Android phone so guessing Apple Music won’t be the best.
Tips and advice gratefully received.

Spotify is the best IMO. They all cost roughly the same per month.

I think Play Music is the best but, like you say, it's looking likely to me merged into Youtube music and who knows what that will be like.

We have a Spotify family sub. I like most things about it, although I find the artist radio option - where you select an artist and then it plays similar artists as well - a bit too limited, the playlists seem to be quite short and repetative.

None of them seem to have a way of creating eclectic personalised radio stations like Pandora still, I'm amazed none let you do that still (ie select numerous artists regardless of genre, etc and it'll play stuff similar to all of them).

I don't find I discover much new music through Spotify.

Thanks, I’ll look into Spotify. I know there are some artists who boycott streaming services so need to look at who Spotify don’t have!

You can get a month free trial on each and if you look around you might get two or three. Looks like Groupon have two free months on Tidal at the moment, for example.

If you can find anyone to share with you the family subs are a good idea. Supposed to be all in the same household but they don't check AFAIK. We have one with my dad and two sisters; we have two, Dad and younger sis has two and my other sis and her husband have the other, all over 100 miles apart, not had any issues in two years.
