Universal launches Blu Ray slate on July 22 2008 + Heroes S1&2 in August!

With The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King and [likely] Doomsday

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:
Universal Studios, once Hollywood's top backer of the doomed HD DVD video format, will soon release all its new videos on the victorious Blu-ray rival at the same time as its standard DVDs.

The studio is set to announce Thursday that the program will kick off in the summer with the recent box office flop "Doomsday."

Universal's Blu-ray strategy includes plans to release about 40 titles in the second half of the year.

Among them are the studio's five big feature films of the summer, including "The Incredible Hulk," with Edward Norton, William Hurt and Liv Tyler; "Wanted," an action thriller starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie; "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"; "Mamma Mia," the adaptation of the musical starring Meryl Streep; and the sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.

Universal officially will enter the Blu-ray market July 22 with a trio of films from its "Mummy" action-adventure franchise: "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," both starring Fraser, and the spinoff "The Scorpion King," with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Also planned for domestic Blu-ray before the year is up are the catalog titles "American Gangster," "Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Miami Vice," "End of Days," "U-571" and "Land of the Dead," among others.

Universal had been HD DVD's biggest studio backer ever since the next-generation optical disc format came to market in April 2006. But when Toshiba pulled the plug on the format in February, the studio wasted no time switching its allegiance to Sony's Blu-ray.

Hurrah! I wonder what route they'll go for their encodes though. Trim them down from HD DVD's 30GB to a single-layer 25GB BD (cheaper option by far)?

Or will they actually use the extra capacity of the 50GB discs to add lossless audio to everything (not to mention retaining lossless audio on international discs)?

I imagine we'll be seeing mostly new encodes and double layer discs.

Actually, with "The Fly", "Point Break" and "Natural Born Killers" coming, they do seem to be making some ground. Well, that's presuming NBK and PB get a UK release, which they will.

I heard that there will be a shortage of 50GB discs till Q3 year due to the demand PS3 games put on Sony's facilitates.

The big question though, will they region code or not bother?

Awesome news, I'm pleased cos there was a massive lull after the news of HD DVD going down the pan. Finally, HD media is going somewhere! Now for Paramount!

The Fly has been out 6 months.

They probably didn't even use the whole 30gb anyway. Simplest thing would be just to dump the encodes on a 50gb disc with no improvements. Still Warner is making The Animatrix HD for the Blu-ray version of The Matrix so there is hope.

TBH, that list doesn't do anything for me. I might get Heroes S1 although my love for that show evaporated pretty quickly.

Was it region free?

The Fly is a Fox release, so region locked I'm afraid.

Hence the reason I've only just mentioned it.

If BD was region Free I would have included it in the "BD Must haves" ages ago.

but thats due to it still being SD, whereas HD encodes exist for these Universal releases. I expect the same encodes to be used like Warner are doing in the their re-release schedule in the main.

Warner could have just ported the HD DVD version over, that's the point. They went a step further and did a new transfer or new encode. No reason why Universal can't do the same with their releases
