Cassidy Reshoots "Blade Runner"

from darkhorizons.com:

Here's a surprising factoid - twenty five years after its theatrical release, new scenes were shot for Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" it would seem.

Since the DVD format became popular, fans have been clamoring for Scott's "final cut" of the film, his true definitive version of the sci-fi epic rather than the rushed 1992 "Director's Cut" which Scott has publicly stated he was unhappy with.

Though work began in 2000 on the disc set, legal issues and other factors have delayed it for years. Then late last year it was confirmed that the film would be finally coming out in a massive multi-disc box set sometime in the second half of 2007 to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary.

Anticipation remains high. Scott's "Legend" and "Kingdom of Heaven", two films which received mixed reaction upon release, scored lavish 'final cut' DVD editions in the last few years with the longer versions garnering far more acclaim than their original counterparts.

In any case this week saw a surprising new twist in the story. Actress Joanna Cassidy, famous for playing the Replicant Zhora in "Blade Runner", released the following comment on her official site:

"Joanna has just finished re-shooting her scenes from the original BLADE RUNNER movie. Joanna is wearing her original outfit (which she kept over from the first production). These new scenes will be part of the upcoming special BLADE RUNNER DVD re-release. Check back for more details."

This is surprising news, begging the question of how much new footage was shot and what impact it will have on the final cut.

...and the fact that, tbh, she's pretty damn old. What's this new footage going to be? A flash-forward thirty years into an alternate future where Deckard didn't waste Zhora and they all live happily in some Replicant retirement home?

Interesting.

I'm presuming it will have to be a flash-forward thingy, otherwise it will look a bit odd.

I really don't like this idea of re-shooting scenes or shooting extra scenes for a film 25 years after the fact.
That said I'm sure it'll be interesting whatever it is. For some reason I'm thinking that it could be the human model for that replicant line or something? Been watching too much BSG!

They couldn't have done that with CG? To actually require the actress back means they must be using her in a way where she'd be recognisable - else they could just get anyone who looks vaguely the same and plan their shots carefully.

Mr Scott may be unhappy with it, but the film is still a classic. What is the point in redoing it. Surely too much time has passed. Unless he added bits by cgi, but that would kinda go against the soul of the film. Im sure the real reason hes doing this is for the money, not for the art

So will that be three or four versions of this now?

Are the others available on dvd? Or just the special edition?

They don't need to do a "Lucas" with this film!

/gazes lovingly at his Criterion laserdisc...

I'm willing to bet it's most likely just stuff shot for the Special Features on the DVD... "Oh looks she's wearing the same dress while getting interviewed".

She's just naively cleverly phrased it on her website to get more hits from the nerds.

Nah it's a surprise twist, Deckard is about to shoot her and in walks Eddie Valiant. Turns out they were in Toon Town all along.

As said above, surely it's the bit where the stuntwoman, who's not much better than the one in 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka', crashes through the glass. Good to know that hopefully this will be the final, FINAL version!

Didn't the makers of the godawful 'Renegade Edition' of Highlander 2 do a similar thing?

Shooting extra bits to put back into the film waaaaaaaaaaay after the film was made?

I do remember watching that and blatently seeing someone that WASN'T Michael Ironside in an even dodgier wig than the one that Mike had.

Hmmmmmm.

I wish that people would just leave things alone.

Yeah, although it was mainly FX shots that were replaced. The newly shot stuff in the DC of THX 1138 is fairly offensive also.
