We Need To Talk About Kevin

I see a film of this has just been made (which is often how I hear about books ) and sounds interesting. Book worth a read?

I haven't read it personally, but most of the people who've borrowed it from the library I work at have loved it.

It's very good. Takes a little while to get going but its worth the journey. Very bleak though. Far bleaker than I was expecting for such a popular book.

It's a brilliant book, if anyone is struggling with it then try the audiobook version instead. It's read by Lorelei King and she does a great job.

Just finished it, grabbed me from the off and I read it in three sittings. Brutally dark in places. Thoroughly recommended.

yep - I read this a year ago and enjoyed it too - had not previously heard of it, just a copy someone had left behind.

Quite a difference in style to anything I'd read before, and I agree too with Paul's spoiler (above).

Just caught this October interview with Lionel Shriver - Hardtalk on BBC World News - very interesting.

30 mins - on BBC iPlayer or here at Hardtalk homepage (no signs of it on youtube).

It was word of mouth that propelled the novel We Need to talk about Kevin onto the best seller lists. It had been given very little publicity. Its author, Lionel Shriver, had struggled to find a publisher in the first place. It was deemed too dark and uncomfortable a read - the musings of a mother on the son she never really liked who turns into a mass killer.
Now the story has been made into a critically acclaimed film and is about to reach even larger audiences. HARDtalk's Sarah Montague asks why such an unnatural tale has proved so compelling?

Thread about the film.
