Has anyone tried the Kindle Fire? Any good as a reader?

I'm going to get my other half a Kindle for xmas, but I was wondering whether it's worth looking at the Kindle Fire. Has anyone tried it as a reader? Does the screen work well? And what is the battery like?

I don't expect it to match the Ipad for browsing, etc, but we have an Ipad 2 anyway, but she would like a good compact book reader. I don't tend to read books (lack of patience and too many other things I'd rather do!) so I'm not really knowledgeable about them!

Thanks!

I can't comment on the fire although I have read the odd comment that as an E-Reader some prefer the E-Ink screen to the backlight of the Fire. Personally if you want to just read books you can't go wrong with a Ł79 Kindle.

I was unsure for a while about them but after using one it's miles better than iPad etc. The size is great and it so easy on the eye and clear. Best gadget I've bought this ages.

Yes, it is US only but it looks like it can be had fairly easily over here.

May just be me wanting it to d the rest though...! The only time I read books is if they're computer or guitar related, but she does read a lot! Does the normal Kindle handle PDFs and e-pub format ok?

PDFs, yes. ePub, no. Any ePub books will need to be converted. I think Amazon offer a free converter to do this, but there are plenty of others too.

I use Calibre to convert from e-pub, no hassle at all and works fine.

If you want it to read get an e-ink kindle. You've already got the ipad for the all singing tablet device.

Just don't see that article as being accurate, unfortunately. Amazon had the US infrastructure in place long before they launched their device there: Amazon MP3 Locker, App Store etc are still predominantly US-focused so I'd expect these to look UK-ward for a few months before they launch their tablet here,
