So what happens to 3D Blu-ray discs now?

When 3D was the 'in-thing' a few years ago, I bought several films with the 3D option along with the regular 2D blu-ray in the same package. Hobbit Trilogy, The Walk, Avatar, Fantastic Beasts etc. Now that 3D appears well and truly dead, will those 'spare' Blu-ray discs ever be played on present 4K televisions if one has an older 3D compatible BD player?

I'm with you there, big fan of 3D, I'm more worried about when my 3D TV goes kaput as I know getting another one maynot be easy.

Unfortunately with 3D its alwasy been one extreme or the other. Question is when Avatars start comnig out again will it rejuvenate the 3D industry again or not bother

Our 3D television got relegated to the bedroom because we thought it was broken. There were "shadows" on the screen during bright scenes.

I laid it flat on the bed whilst I installed the new TV downstairs. When I turned it back on, the screen was fixed, the shadows were gone. We continued to use it and the last 3D film I bought was Ghost in the Shell.

Unfortunately, the TV went POP (literally) on Boxing Day morning. 3D wasn't really an option to replace it. That fad seems to have long passed.

I've read that some 4K TVs have 2D to 3D 'converters'. Is that true and if so, is that something that comes with the TV spec or to be installed? For instance, is that available on an LG OLED 65" C9 4K TV?

Obviously, that feature should not interfere with regular 4K viewing.

My 3D TV had a 2D to 3D converter where it tried to make 2D content look like it had more depth by offsetting the picture, once for each eye. Can't see how a non 3D screen could do anything similar. I do find that a decent image with a good black level does give a lot of depth to a 2D image, but it's not related to 3D bluray content - at least as far as I know.

Certainly my 65" LG OLED C9 gives a very good impression of depth and the Sony KD49XG 9005BU 49” Smart 4K LED and even the Panasonic TX 40GX 800B 40” Smart 4K UHD LED are not far behind.

From what you say Shteve, it looks like the 3D discs of my 20 or so movies (that are 3D+BD packs) are defunct. I'll just have to accept it like everyone else. Fortunately, I don't have any 3D only discs.

But having said that, there do appear to be some kits that claim to convert 2D TVs to 3D. I don't mind investing on one of those for my 65" TV IF the effect is good and it can be switched on and off as necessary. This one seems to be sold on eBay etc - just Google it.

Interesting. Reviews of that indicate the picture is blurred, can flicker unless you modify brightness settings, only works with the supplied glasses and they have a 3 hour battery life. I'd probably give it a miss. Can still dig out the projector if I fancy a 3D film.

We just realised the other day that if someone wants to watch a 3D film you can pop on the PSVR headset. Only one can watch at a time though!

Thanks. I am a Senior Citizen and not very tech savvy and so need some details. I have an old Panasonic DMP BDT130 that is 3D capable but I am not sure how to enable that function. It is liked to my LG OLED 65" C9 4K television.

I have several 3D Blu-ray discs that I'd like to see (Avatar, Hobbit trilogy. The Walk etc etc) on 3D. What PSVR et should I get and how should I use it? (I don't do gaming)

The whole 3D thing passed me by, bought a new tv in 2010 and home 3D wasn't a thing, bought my current TV in 2017 and LG didn’t put it in that years OLED. I have heard that it looked much better then the offering in the cinema.

You're looking at an outlay of at least �450 because it's a console gaming setup. You need around �250 for a PlayStation 4 and then another �200 for the PlayStation VR headset.

Oh dear! I think I'll pass on that one.

Am sure several others are in the same situation as I am - a large collection of 3D blu-ray discs and a 3D capable player but no 3D TV. Is there any chance that someone will come-up with a reasonably priced gizmo that solves the problem?

3D, in it's current form, is dead.

VR is the only way you'll see 3D films in the future. The PSVR probably has the longest lifespan, the hardware will be available new and then second hand for a very long time and software updates don't usually remove these kinds of features. If it works using the blu-ray discs themselves, then it's compliant with copy protection, a PC VR headset won't be able to deal with blu-ray copy protection, so you'll need to rip/backup the discs yourself, and find a compatible PC VR app to play 3D films.

3d is one of the reasons i'm still keeping my Sony TV (55 W905).

Thinking when I do upgrade to a 4k TV i'll need to get a projector to continue watching 3d films.

Don't fancy watching a film in VR although i'll see what that's like when I get a PSVR headset.

My 50" LG is 3d. Still working.

My brother inlaw actually bought the same one and his is sitting in my garage with a single blown LED that is prohibiting the TV from displaying a picture beyond the LG logo. ( LED driver is being shut down because of the voltage drop which is rendering an otherwise perfectly working TV, useless ) .

I haven't brought myself to chuck it out as the fix is so damn easy . Does anyone fix TV's for any reasonable price ?

While the 3D picture was a great gimmick, it gave me and my family headaches, so I couldn't stomach it beyond a film. A bit like getting off a fairground ride and feeling sick for the rest of the day. Doesn't make you much ever want to get back on it.

I dotn use mine that much only for films which i think it would suit, watched War of the Worlds and Temple of Doom in 3D the weekend and the Professor and the madman and everything else in 2D.
