Oscars 2020

How the heck does Tom Hanks get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for a role where he plays the main part?

Matthew Rhys is the lead actor in that film though.

I haven't seen many of them, but I imagine Greta Gerwig is a lock for adapted screenplay for Little Women as they overlooked her in the directing category (which, naturally, the media is going ape**** over it)

Best picture seems like a total crapshoot this year, but Parasite, Little Women & Marriage Story have all been almost universally praised.

Acting-wise, I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh & Brad Pitt win

The Lion King deserves the effects award. However pointless & soulless that film was, as a technical achievement it's astonishing.

Have you seen it then? He's the title role but not necessarily the lead, am guessing the lead is the pov character meeting and getting to know him.

So we have:

Best Picture
Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit SEEN LOVED
Joker SEEN OK
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood SEEN OK
Parasite

Out of that little lot want now to see:

Ford v Ferrari
The Irishman
1917
Parasite
From Best Animated Feature want to see How to Train your Dragon 3 and I lost my Body (never heard of it!), am not watching Klaus when it isn’t xmas! Can’t believe Missing Link beat Toy Story 4 at the Golden Globes, seen them both and Toy Story 4 is easily the better film.
Have only seen For Sama from the best docs, but can’t see anything beating it! Know nothing about the others
Best Documentary Feature
American Factory
The Cave
The Edge of Democracy
For Sama
Honeyland
And want to see this:

Best Supporting Actor
Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

I think that gives me enough to be going on with!

I was largely going on the film being about the character he plays - haven't actually seen it.

As for some of the other categories, I would love JoJo Rabbit to get Best Picture but reckon Joker/1917 have already got that in the bag.

Scarlett Johansson could easily pick up 2 Oscars as well - she was excellent in both.

!
Klaus is by far the best animation on the list. I lost my body is another Netflix original and its pretty good. A severed hand tries to find its body. Nicely animated but a bit too indie to win I imagine.

Out of the top 6 categories (director, film, actor, supporting actor, actress, supporting actress), I haven't yet seen:
Parasite (seeing next week)
Two Popes (will watch in next couple of weeks)
Bombshell (will see when it is out)
Richard Jewell (will see when it is out)
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (will see when it is out)
Harriet (not sure whether will get to see this one as it wasn't on round our way).

So in a month's time should have seen all except one

Anyone that's seen Marriage Story - it looks pretty low key, so how's the visuals and audio ?

Is it TV-style, so perfectly watchable in 720p, or will it benefit from 1080/5.1 ?

I've seen it on normal HD. It's not a film I watched with much attention to the cinematography or other aspects of the visuals. It's not that sort of film for me.

Agree re marriage story, thought it was excellent but very much made for TV.

Only best picture I've not seen is Parasite, booked in for this Friday & really looking forward to it.

Would love to see Jojo Rabbit get something, but Joker is the stand out for me

I seem to be the minority but I much prefer Jojo Rabbit to Joker. Far more original film.

Depends on your mood on the day, and how much you value originality, I suppose.

I can certainly see why some people wouldn't like Joker at all - could it be as bleak as Hollywood gets ?

really was bleak but all the better for it

Parasite was a big surprise, and "best picture" out of that lot for me.

Well, I agree with most of those. Glad to see nowt for The Irishman, and no biggies for the gimmick war film. Go Korea!

And a special mention for the best actor getting artificial insemination into his acceptance speech.

Saw all the best bictures and it just really stood out, didn't get the fuss about 1917, the one shot thing only worked up to a point, and there were times when the story/plot suffered for it, technically impressive but that was about it imo.

For me Parasite had everything, that and Joker were the only two I left the cinema thinking I had seen something very special, and different!

I'm happy about the winners. I loved 1917 but pleased for the Parasite win anyway.
