[360/PS3] Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Early 2013
Following its change of developer and new 'Revengeance' subtitle the new Metal Gear is nearly here. Developed by Platinum Games (Bayonetta, Vanquish) this is very much an action title though it still retains some stealth elements (or at least gives the option of stealth) and even the precision slicing they showed way back when it was first announced in 2009.
Anyone heard any decent word of mouth on this? Worth a pre-order? Love the previous MGS games, but this looks to be a bit of a Devil May Cry/button basher maybe? Looks pretty though!
I played a demo at a convention a few months ago and enjoyed it. It's nothing like your standard MGS game and is more of a button masher as you say. I found it hard, but that's mainly because I was being rushed through my demo and didn't really get all the controls and have time to get used to them either. From what I recall it wasn't that difficult to handle.
Apparently there's a demo coming out soon, so I'm looking forward to playing that and having a good chance to get to grips with it.
I actually thought this was another bog standard MGS game and willing to hold out on buying as I have hardly been able to play them since Snakeeater but then saw it was a Platinum game!!
I got to the area with loads of the giant ED209 type things and couldn't really get out of the way of their attacks - clearly me being a tool and gave up in the end.

Parrying is the defence mechanism of the game, push forward and press attack at the same time whilst being attacked. If it's relatively close it's a block but if you get it just right within so many frames it's a parry and you get a chance to hit back straight away. There's a lot of systems in the demo which admittedly they don't explain but I'm looking forward to the depth of the full game
Here's a Saur video where he runs through the demo just to show you how much you can do:

DMC is getting surprisingly good reviews though so that might be the better option.
Well I went into it with high expectations and the demo didn't disappoint for me 60fps especially is what action games need and the combat's great fun with super responsive controls, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Platinum pull off with the full game. Easily my most wanted game in February as well, can't wait.
really enjoying this, bat **** insane but feels like MGS in atmosphere with the codecs and anti-war. Slicing up enemies is a lot of fun, you get to kill bosses and feels satifsying
Sadly I'm not that fond of it, which makes that 2 Platinum games in a row
It's really easy to pick up and play, looking like a badass and effectively recreating those awe inspiring Raiden cut-scenes from MGS4, but I find the combat feels a little loose and almost like you can just mash your way through the game. You have to want to take it slowly and learn the moves rather than actually needing to (on Normal anyway), and I've done that to an extent, but it still feels like it's lacking something.
The camera is terrible.
The story is the usual nonsense only here it seems even worse with a bunch of dull characters and cut-scenes that go on and on like the energiser bunny. There's a few corny jokes to lighten the tone and those are appreciated, but generally I've struggled not to hit the 'skip' button (something I hate to do when I first play through any game). The little forced slow-walk Gears-esque moments feel really strange here as well.
The final boss is a total *******. It's checkpointed me on his final form and while I have a full health bar I have zero health packs. So I don't see me finishing it as I really can't be bothered.
All of which is a great shame as when you're in the moment, parrying left and right, entering slow-mo and ripping out spines it can be pretty satisfying.
Little bit disappointing due to a couple of things, very short and the last boss is ******* terrible. if it did the level on normal, I may of smashed the control The mexican kid was terrible, skipped all his cutscenes and **** he said
the story is silly but always found MGS story silly, the camera is terrible, mainly in the office area. i really liked the main combat. Now sold, expected more from Platinum
I think its rubbish despite really liking MGS as a franchise. Messy combat mechanics, the camera fights against you and the visuals are ugly clichéd greys. Can't understand the review scores at all.
