Woody Allen: A Documentary

Airs tonight and tomorrow on PBS in the US - 3 hours long and the first time he has allowed his filming making process to be documented on film.

Made by Robert Weide who used to co-write Curb.
Looks cracking.

Out on DVD on Valentine's day

Really enjoyed this even though the 2nd part moves a bit too fast through his latter day career.
As there's never any extras on Allen dvd's, it was great to see the footage of him cracking up at Diane Keaton during the making of Sleeper - would love to see more of this type of thing.

Hard to believe that the first he knew of Annie Hall winning Oscars was by reading it in the paper the next morning - surely someone would have called him on the night ? (although the lack of mobile phones in the 70's probably helped with this).

Weide is a major talent. Aside from his work on Curb, he wrote and produced Mother Night, the best film of 1996 imho (and that was the year of two heavyweights, English Patient and Larry Flynt).

Interview with Sean Penn? I'm sure I read Penn hated Allen with a passion.

Penn is interviewed and seems to remember Woody quite fondly although he says something like - "after my first scene I looked up to see his reaction and he was already discussing something with someone else. I just wanted to hear him comment on how I was doing - I'm still waiting !".

So this is showing in select cinemas from next week. I've been looking forward to seeing this but the UK cinema release is 2hrs long - losing a whole hour seems like a lot to lose. May have to hold off and try to source the original 3hr version.
