I want a really scary / jumpy film for tonight - suggestions?

So, me and the wife have got a night in organised - fish curry, bottle of white, popcorn. And I fancy watching a really jumpy / scary film, so I'm looking for suggestions to go out and rent one.

Not really into slasher flicks a la Nightmare On Elm Street / Hallowe'en etc but would watch one that did a fresh take on the well trodden path. Have no problem with foriegn language films although not really got into the Japanese films yet. Loved The Orphanage.

Quite liked Hostel and the first two Saw films but cringed more than jumped. I'm looking for something that'll make me jump out of my seat, and one I can turn the volume up to 11 on!

Looking forward to any suggestions.

I haven't seen it, but the new My Bloody Valentine effort is supposedly pretty jumpy... Not sure if it's just an average slasher without the 3D effects though.

It's an oldie but, if you haven't seen the Exorcist, it's still the scariest I've seen...

Don't watch My Bloody Valentine... gimmick gimmick gimmick

The Descent is a definate... it'll have ya in the first few scenes if you have the surround up loud..

[REC] Lots of little jumps in this one

Jeepers Creepers... I really liked this but people go off it during the antagonist reveal... they just don't understand!!

The Strangers - Not that good but made to make you jump... usual MTV horror fare

Wrong Turn - is a good little slasher film

Friday The 13th Remake - Came out on Monday and it's much better than the Halloween Remake.

Halloween (The Original) - Go classic? This film still creeps me out to this day... can't watch it alone lol

Another vote for The Descent. It's excellent and ticks all the right boxes. Scared the life out of me.

28 Weeks later also did it for me...

The original 'Shutter' was very good, not sure about the remake, but it might be worth a look. Not sure if its out on DVD..?

I preferred the tension of Weeks.

Spoiler:
When the kids are up in that attic, and the opening scene.

I dont remember 'Days..' being all that jumpy. Havent seen it for ages, mind, so need to go and watch it again soon.

Days was frightening. Weeks was more exciting though.

I found The Descend massivaly overrated and completely unscary. The monsters looked like Buffy the Vampire Slayer rejects and there were lots of 'fake' jump scares where characters creep up on each other. That in a cave, where everything is deadly quiet and you here the quietest footstep hundreds of yards away because everything echoes.

I will also recommend The Descent, brilliant film and really scary.
And there's always Alien only a few jumps, but they're gooduns and the whole atmosphere is just one of dread throughout. I'm sure you've seen it, though.
