Salvaging parts from a broken laptop

A friend has given me an Acer laptop to fix (the screen is completely knackered, with the bottom 2/3rds of it being completed dead and top 1/3 working fine!) but has since bought a new one. I'm now left with a laptop that (screen aside) has all working parts). Its quite new, core duo, vista etc so I was wondering what parts of this I can salvage?
HDD and RAM are a given, is there anything else I can save or any way to minimise the loss on this laptop?

you could try a new screen & sell as a working unit, or sell as spares or repair.

How much do laptop screes costs (roughly) and are they something you can self-install? never considered replacing the screen as I assumed it would cost as much as the laptop did!

The screen might be not working properly due to some broken wires (they go through the hinge so get bent a lot).

You could probably sell the battery and power supply on eBay for maybe £30 a piece.

if you are lucky the cpu will be a normal skt775 jobby that will work in a regular board. laptop cpus (normally marked as Txxxx) are great for HTPC machines as they run pretty cool.

You could always use it as a desktop with a monitor connected.

Or give it to a blind person, which is what a company I used to work for did with their laptops with broken screens, the guy would sit there with the screen all cracked and "LCD gooey", visitors must have thought we were a right cheapskate outfit . But he was happy so long as Jaws was installed

I replaced the screen (13") on my MacBook for £90. It was quite straightforward, just followed an on-line guide.
