Why did Caroline Quentin leave Jonathan Creek?

I'm rapidly getting through the complete Jonathan Creek boxset, courtesy of the bargain forums and Benson's World and was just wondering if anyone knew why Caroline Quentin left after series three? There doesn't seem to be much information about the show on the net. The little I have found just indicates that, when she declined to appear in the 2001 Christmas special, there was still some possibility at the time that she might return for the subsequent series (which, ultimately, she didn't).
Having said that, I feel as though I may have written off the introduction of Julia Sawalha for the remaining episodes upon their original transmission, although arguably it wasn't helped by the BBC splitting the six part series into two shorter three-episode runs. I'm always suspicious when shows continue after losing one of their key elements, but I actually think the final series largely maintained the quality of previous instalments after re-watching it.

Supposedly Caroline Quentin decided that she'd had enough of playing Maddie after four years, and wanted to take time off as she planned to try for a second baby. She'd actually gone into labour with her first baby during the filming of the last episode she did appear in, eighteen months earlier.

Thanks, I'd had a quick snoop around the BBC website beforehand but didn't realise they went into quite that much depth. Alan Davies' response seems a lot less forgiving, and seems to suggest some ill-feeling about the whole thing. It does seem a bit unfair of Quentin to leave them in the lurch like that, and not even film a small swansong for her character. Oh well, it's satisfied my curiosity at least
