Ghost In The Shell Blu-Ray question

What, if anything, is the difference between the steelbook edition of Ghost In The Shell, and "Ghost In The Shell 2.0" on Blu-Ray? Just picked up the steelbook, forgetting I already have 2.0... Worth keeping both?

Are we talking about the LE Steelbook with a picture of Kusanagi with white hair on a turquiose background? If so that's a release of the original, untouched, non-remixed Ghost in the Shell movie, so no crappy 2.0 CGI sequences and whatnot.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 has the original movie on it as an extra feature. It's 1080i 60Hz, and looks like an upscale, but it at least has decent subtitles, and the English audio isn't faulty. The Steelbook version is another pooch screw from Manga Entertainment.

I've heard people say the subititles on this are terrible on various forums over the years, but they never actually state what it is exactly that is so wrong. It's beyond frustrating, and frankly downright inconsiderate when you get a post like the one above that offers no worthwhile information for the OP.

I've yet to actually sit and watch my own copy, might do so soon so someone can FINALLy explain the subtitles issue, if there's one at all.

Without looking into it specifically it's usually either because the subs are for the dub rather than the original language (the BBFC charge less for subtitling of the English as if's classed as a heard of hearing friendly), or they're different to what they think they should be.

I can't remember if the original GITS film has had multiple subs over the years or not, I suspect the original 90's era subs may not have been as true to the Japanese script as a modern set would be.

Not GITS specific, but I've seen people argue that the subs on a fast translation fansub done without access to the original script (let alone director to answer any queries about meaning) are better than the professionally done ones based on the actual japanese script and not what was heard by the translator.

Well that's the thing, fans like to cry blue murder over dubtitles, but they're not always a bad translation of the Japanese. Kiki's Delivery Service and the US BD of Grave of the Fireflies are two good examples of unwarranted complaint about decent enough dubtitle translations.

I'm not saying that's the case for GITS, but unless posters actually state what exactly is the issue with the subs and how it's been investigated and proven, then you can't really have any kind of insightful discussion on the issue, you either take their posts at face value or not.

Thank you JPW, but it's a bit rich you suggesting we were too lazy to google the issue when you couldn't even be arsed to write the 20 words or so that would have explained your comments to begin with! For the record I did a google search and was having a hard time finding the specific page on the specific thread on the specific site that was specifically discussing this issue two years ago. You obviously was already aware of said specific discussion so will have an easier time finding it!

Oh and the two examples they list? Pathetic moaning from fans, will have to watch the entire film to see how bad it is though, but changing "it's that time of the month" to "I'm on my period" doesn't sound like a travesty of translation.
