No England are not there yet as these odd bad performances do still creep in, a recent example is the third match of the one day series with South Africa prior to this tournament but today we were poor and Pakistan were excellent.

I don't think so. The bowling was certainly not special enough to make Stokes play 60 balls without a boundary to his name or Buttler surrender his wicket like he did.

There is something psychological about quality spin bowling by the opposition that affects the England batsmen. The odd part is that those spinners may not always be the ones getting the wickets as such; but the braking effect caused by them often results in the batsmen taking risks against the seamers and get out. Under 'normal' circumstances, England's batsmen would have dealt with a seamer like Hasan Ali with aplomb on home wickets.

A great day for England and Root yesterday. Let's hope they can turn this in to 500+. SA really suffered with only 3 front line seamers.

The only real negative for England was Ballance who still looks poor at this level. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong in the 2nd innings

After being 79-4 for I feared the worst but there was a complete turnaround in the afternoon which was helped by some pretty poor cricket from South Africa with wickets from no balls especially Root who was stumped off a no ball from the spinner. With Ali looking good at the other end hopefully these two can kick on this morning.

Is Philander carrying an injury as they seem a bit reluctant to bowl him at times which is odd seeing as he was their best bowler.

Good knock from Broad has given us a pretty good score but the pitch still looks very good. Hopefully we can knock them over for 400 or less.
