Free Fire - Ben Wheatley

I went to see a Q&A showing of this last night and it's pretty enjoyable.

I don't think anything Ben's done since Kill List has really lived up that film and this certainly doesn't either, but there's enough good lines and a generally humorous tone that just about carries it through its compact running time.

In the Q&A afterwards Ben said they got through around 7,000 rounds of ammo, so that should tell you how kinetic and nonstop the action is.

I'd recommend it but it's a bit slight overall.

My girlfriend actually won a competition to see the UK premier at the closing of the BFI film festival last year.

I agree, that the plot is pretty slight but it's funny throughout most of the movie. Sort of like Reservoir Dogs mixed with Hot Fuzz!

"With this special advance preview not only you will see 'Free Fire' before release, but you will also have a first look at 15 mins of exclusive 3D footage from a mystery film yet to be released. "

Well that was a lot of fun. Good characters, lots of laughs and very violent.
The Ghost in the Shell long trailer in 3d looked really good.

This was great. As good as I'd hoped for.

Very violent, sweary (so much so we had two walk outs, no idea what they'd expected) and very funny.

Sharlto Copley was the stand out, though the whole cast were good.

Having seen the 15 min 3d preview of Ghost In The Shell, I'm still unsure but thought the 3d was good.

Thought this was really great as well, fantastic dialogue, fantastic characters, excitingly shot, and everyone is on top form, even Arnie Hammer is very good! Sharlto Copley does indeed steal the show, good to actually see him do his thing but reigned in and not go to 11 like he usually does.

Sole voice of dissent here. I was bored silly by this. 90 minute runtime seemed like far longer. Felt like one of the dire Tarantino rip offs that appeared all through the mid 90s. Really disappointing because I've thoroughly enjoyed Wheatley's films up to High Rise, which I didn't like either but still found interesting.

The first 60 minutes are ok but then you have half an hour of people dragging themselves across floors.

It's going very quickly. Presumably a lot of the target audience caught it on previews or the festival circuit last year.

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. It's nothing too original or clever, but the cast were great and the run-time flew by (despite it being nearly 90 minutes of people crawling around on the floor shouting swear words). It was fairly unpredictable as well. I was surprised that the trailers didn't spoilt it nearly as much as I'd originally thought.

Gone from my local already. I guess it'll work fine on the small screen so not too annoyed at missing it.

The film has great use of directional sound, but that's really the only main benefit of catching it in the cinema.
