Anatomy of a Flipside - TDF Feature

Anthony Nield, one of our writers who regularly covers BFI releases for film.thedigitalfix.com has just posted the first in a series of features that will go behind the scenes and look at the process involved in creating a BFI Flipside Dual Format Edition release. I know that quite a few of you here are very fond of the Flipside series (and BFI releases in general) so thought I would highlight it here...

Part 1 is an overview of the series, and Part 2 which is due next monday will look at the early stages of development for their forthcoming release of Andy Milligan's 'Nightbirds'. Anthony has been given a great deal of behind the scenes access for this feature and actually visited the BFI and saw them working on the transfer so you can expect some great stuff in the weeks to come.

Here's the opening paragraph which outlines the feature in Anthony's own words:

Throughout May the Digital Fix will be taking a behind the scenes look at one of this month’s BFI Flipside releases, Andy Milligan’s 'Nightbirds'. In weekly instalments we’ll be tracing the disc’s course from conception to production, explaining how and why this film was chosen for release and the various problems (and solutions) the DVD team faced in bringing it to a home audience. Each step will be accounted for, from transferring the film elements and selecting the extras to putting together the booklet and designing the packaging.

Enjoy :)

I'll make sure to pop back in and post the subsequent parts here.

Good stuff. I love the Flipside releases.

Great piece and thanks for highlighting it. Interesting to see if there are any hints given in future postings as to future releases as the BFI do such a great job in preserving and making available these lost gems. If only all the studios took so much care.
